Hi. I'm new to the forum - I was lucky enough to be given a 1986 VF500 FII by a work colleague. It had been stood in his garden shed for 12 years and was in surprisingly good condition. Anyway, after a spell at the menders, it was road worthy - and i love it.

By the way, I live in the UK.

Unfortunately, I came to start the little monster at the weekend. It started fine but sounded to be struggling to keep the tick-over going - even with a handful of choke.

It ran for about 2 mins and stalled. Now it won't start. The battery is fully charged. I've cleaned the plugs. And the engine turns when I hit the starter. But it won't fire up.

I've also put new fuel in the tank and mixed with some STP petrol treatment.

Any pointers on how to get me mobile again would be appreciated.

    Thanks.

My mechanic knowledge is like Britney Spear's talent; virtually nonexistent :p but my first thought would be that the sparks are not firing up. Maybe spark cables have given up the ghost?

Also you could check the carburators; maybe the engine is flooded and won't fire?
Hope you get her on the road soon mate!

check for spark in pairs 1/3 and 2/4. If one fails it's most likely the ignition box for that set. E-bay is the only way to go for that. Unless you have around $350.00 at a dealer.

You need fuel/air, spark and compression at the proper time. Then you get bang.

    She's working!!!!!

    Thanks for your advise.

Turns out that the copper grease on the plugs (put on by the guy who got her back on the road for me earlier in the year) was running into the engine and affecting a sensor. Hey I'm no techi so I took the garages word for it.

Before resorting to some professional help, I cleaned the plugs, leads and refueled.

    Anyway, all sorted!!!!

Remember : a VFR never dies, sometimes is just having a rest.

Hi - as requested Rollin_Again here are some pictures. Bear in mind that she's been stood in a garden shed for 12 years. I've only had her back for a couple of months so have only managed to get her to a reasonable standard, so far.

I've done 1000 trouble free miles in that time...

She's completely standard and is even wearing the tyres that were put on new 12 years ago and they're fine!

I'm planning to create a web page with pics and updates on her progress to perfection!
