Anyone installed heated grips on an 84 VF500F?

Hi,

First post here; I am the new owner of an '84 VF500F, returning to motorcycling after an 11 year hiatus. I was very lucky to find a beautiful stock Interceptor with less than 10k miles, and have been enjoying it very much.

My question has to do with installing heated grips on the bike: you can imagine that it's been a bit chilly mornings here in Boston the last couple weeks, so I ordered a set of Symantec grip heaters from Cali Sport Touring. I am wondering if anyone here has installed heated grips or other peripheral gear on a bike like mine, and if there is a convenient circuit I can use, or ones I should avoid. The bike came with a full shop manual, but I'm hoping for some first-hand advice.

Go to search option and search for heated grips, There are couple write up on this forum. I installed on my bike but did not have any write up. It is fairly easy

Thanks for the suggestion:when I did that search (limited to the 1st & 2nd Gen forum) only 1 hit came up, & it wasn't related. I will try it on the broader site & see what turns up. I'm curious if anyone's been through this on my particular bike, though.

Should be the same

I believe the handle bars are the same for all sport bike. 3/4 and i belive the touring and chopper are 1''. Regardless of generation they all should be fit and work the same ways.

 

What Scuba said. The install should be pretty straight forward no matter what gen you have. Just a tip, I would find 12v that is switched to tap into. That way, if you leave the grips on, they don't kill the battery.

 

Here's my write up when I installed mine. LINK The only thing I've changed is I've moved the controller to the right side inner faring. It's a little harder to get to but looks much cleaner.

Last Saturday I installed Symtec grip warmers: these are the kind that go under the bike's original grips, and have Hi and Lo settings. They work perfectly: I ahd the bike out for 2 hours Sunday and the Lo setting was fine.

I ended up wiring them through a switched power lead that also serves the tail light. After removing the front fairing and fuse box cover there are 2 leads visible: one green, one brown) they end in plastic-shielded female receiver fittings. I wired in through the brown one after determining it had 12V switched power. Ground was achieved via the laft side fairing attachment point on the frame and the rocker switch installed on the left side of the fairing. Our digital camera is currently broken but I will post photos of the important parts of the install when we get a replacement for it.
