I'm about to install a new chain and sprockets, probably gonna stick with my tried and true Maxima chain wax,but a quick look at my owners manual made me wonder:
Do any of you use 80-90 wieght gear oil as recomended by the manual?
The chain wax does tend to build up and form a thick gunk that is difficult to clean.I suppose the gear oil would make for a nice shiny-clean looking chain.

    Any thoughts??????:ear:

I know the Slick 50 comments are coming.......stick with your chain wax, unless you like oil all over your bike and the back of your leg. The anti fling properties of modern chain lubes make life a lot cleaner and easier.

As for the shiny chain, i'll pretend i didn't read that part.......

I use the recommended gear lube and have no problem. But I have never used gear wax. After I lube the chain I start the engine, put it in gear and run the back tire up to 20 mph(while on the center stand). That slings the excess lube off and then take a rag and wipe up the gear oil. Not very much actually comes off. not very messy at all.

Honda uses DID for 95% of their OEM chains. DID recommends a chain wax & not a gear oil. That's reason enough for me.

What chain & sprockets did you get. I need a new chain like yesterday.

    KC-10 FE out...

    I got a DID chain,and PBI sprockets (16t,45t)
The rear sprocket is made of 7075-T6 heat treated aircraft aluminum, "stronger than steel".....we'll see about that!!!

Geek engineer alert! 7075 - T6 is tough stuff, some steels arent as strong, while other steels can be way stronger. For sprockets, its more about how the material will wear - hardness and toughness.

Yep, I use gear oil with my Hawke oiler. Works well. Got about 25,000 out of the stock chain. Not as good as some but I'm not as dutiful as I should be about regular lubing.

I get a quart of 80-90 weight Valvoline at Auto Zone. So far on Quart has lasted me uh 5 years and isn't half gone. Now I have to ride to work in my class A's sometimes. So I clean the chain while I lube it. To clean the chain I use 80-90 weight Valvoline. Same quart by the way. Maybe I'm cheap. Maybe I'm smart. I don't know but I have 18000+ and I'm not to the wear zone. Sprockets are holding fine. I can give it all it's got Jim and the Class A's and the Wheels etc stay clean. dono but who sells that wax stuff and how much does it cost. Wonder if it might be related to the people that sell sprocket and chains
