I posted this on another thread about chrome wheels, but just in case anybody missed it, I was wondering if anyone has powder-coated their wheels to match their VFR? I have a red 2001, and I thought it would look pretty cool to paint the wheels red to match the fairings. Has anyone done this, and if so, do you have a picture of it? Thanks.
I dont have pictures, but I do have input. I own a small paint and restore shop. Paint is out for a daily rider. There is good paint out there but the boys at the bike shop will chip them mounting new rubber. Powder coat is the best if they can match the color and they understand what the hell there doing. The wheel bearings and tires must be removed and it needs to be very clear to the power coat guy what not to powder coat. I have not done a VFR yet but thats the basic Idea. Also check in the back of bike mags, some shops do exchange rims, your stockers for coated ones. Make sure the color will match, consider paying for a sample on a scrap piece of metal... painting wheels Can you imagine having your hole bike one colour ????? a good mate of mine did this and the results .well lets say that it didnt look to good , however he opted to change it back fairings( red)- (wheels)-white (rims)-polished. really did stand out looks great with the contrast of red and white. i will post a photo the moment i get it off him, another option is draw a outline of a bike ( using microsoft paint) then just draw your fairing in and simply colour to your liking , i have a blank example if you wish to see , its a great tool for any one trying to make there bike stand out with out having to hassel a paint-shop. jlo. . . . . . .good luck and let me know how you go. . .
I'm in agreement w/ the red rims on a red bike; it would look a little strange. A contrasting color would look better, there are all kinds of cool powdercoat colors out now they have chrome & candy colors as well as all kinds of additives for different effects. Check out http://www.pendrypowdercoatings.com/html/ or http://www.eastwoodco.com/ for ideas. I do a little of my own powder coating I have not tried the chrome yet so I can't give you an honest opinion of the finished product. I do have some just haven't tried it yet, the smoked chrome looks pretty cool w/ a firemist or prism additive in the clear top coat it would give you a very custom, if not bad ass look:flame:
Hey I had a baby blade CBR250RR that had been completely stripped and done in dark blue metallic body work with a pale metallic blue frame and running gear all powder coated including the muffler , I dunno I reckon a PO at some stage must have worked at a poder coating place. The look grew on me and was dead easy to keep shmicky looking with a garden hose and nothing else. I will stick with factory colours on the Viffer tho.
Hmm not sure I'd like that unless you went an off red as to not look weird Thou I do reacll were folks would have one wheel a diferent color than the other one and it looks okay, remember the joe camel bikes?
I remember loving the smokin joe replica but when I see them now I don't like it so much. that one of the things that worries me about going too radical with the paint on mine. I think I'd get tired of it after a while and it's a lot of movie to just get tired of it...
Yes I liked the Smoking Joe theme but its been done to death , As most popular race style schemes , initially thet look great then become like assholes , everyone has one.
Thanks for all of your input. If you guys get a chance to post those pictures, I would really appreciate it. You're probably correct that it would be a bit much to have red rims on a red bike, maybe a cool metallic navy blue would look good. Also, if you have a chance to post that blank example (jlo) of a VFR to mess with in Microsoft paint, that would be great. Thanks, Mel
Mel, I think if you think it would look cool then go for it man! It's your bike and from the sounds of it you would be the only guy with one like that. Just a thought....sorry guys....I'm a rebel I guess!!
That doesn't look too bad. The color of the wheels closely matches the paint if not exactly matches. Wheels painted the same color of the bike will probably look good. But all in all its owners preference and opinion that maters most.
yeah, it doesn't look bad, it's just nt for me. Personally, I love those ghost flames that yamaha started using a few years ago. I wouldn't mind something like that in black on my vfr.
c'mon guys just admit that the red wheels look almost better than the black....if not better!. Poor Mel probably did'nt sleep for days after all the negative feedback about his dream wheels. Hey Mel. you really should go for it if you still want to..I think they look really good personlally. The black is kind of just blah. Remember, one mans trash is another mans treasure.
Well, I ALWAYS thought that it would look pretty cool - fortunately, I haven't lost much sleep over it. You gotta admit, that looks much better than black. I am still not sure if red is the perfect color, but I have a high mount exhaust, and I think painting those wheels with the single-sided swingarm will really set my bike apart from all the others. I'll post pictures when it's all done. Mel
Sorry guys the red on red and black on the middle, looks like a back yard smash repair done on the cheap to hide damage . Yuuuuukkkkk. Horses for courses I spose. I prefer mine black and blue an shiny like bruises thanxs. At least there was some color differential on the babyblade that i had. I will have to see if I can find any pictures to illustrate.
That gold looks pretty sweet. I saw a Superhawk with some darker steel grey metallic rims last night, and I gotta say, they looked damn good - could beat out the red...
I wish I had digital pix of my old FZR that I had done custom. It was purple and red which didn't sound good, but worked really well. Maybe if I can find the film pics, I can get a friend to scan them. Too bad I totalled it right after finishing the custom work. ;(
