The dealer emailed me back today regarding what would be done for the $800 16K Service.

"The 16K service includes: fuel line check, throttle operation, sparkplugs, valve clearance, oil/filter change, idle speed, radiator coolant, cooling system, secondary air supply, drive chain, brake fluid, brake pad wear, brake system, brake light switch, headlight aim, clutch system, clutch fluid, sidestand, suspension, nuts, bolts fastners, wheels/tires, steering head bearings. Most of these items are routine checks, the valve clearance is more involved and time consuming because it is a Vtec engine. "

I'll be passing on this one.

Another thing that should be done, that the dealer didn't mention was to syncronize the throttle bodies and your starter valve (something with idle). I have the full service manual that the dealer uses, if these services were something you wanted to do yourself, I would recommend getting the book. Another thing to save cost, is to remove your fairings and just have them do the engine. You could always change fluids, plugs and a chain yourself. At my 32K service, I had 4 tight valves needing shims. My gas mileage jump about 10mpg (from 42 to 51mpg freeway) after the service.

email him back and tell him a 2000 model is not a VTEC and get the adjusted price. Although if he didn't know that I'm not sure you want him doing it. Hopefully he just quoted you the 6th gen price without asking the mechanic who had better know that the 5th gen was NOT a VTEC. also, do bike dealers do that exchange thing like car dealers where you could order a bike from one dealer and he would send it to your dealer? If you could work something like that out, it might work...

Considering they want $5k for the bike, and it has some damage and needs service, I would pass on it (as you already said you will be).

Just for your reference, I shopped online for several months and this spring I found a 2001 with 5800 miles and zero damage for $4500.

When I bought my 07, the dealer said 16k service would be an 8 hour job. $100 per hour for labor I guess???

 Believe it or not, I didn't have any "spare" parts left over. I was pretty meticulous about disassemling and reassembling it even taking pictures so that I can refer to them later. That saved me several times wondering where the hell does that tube go.

Plus I put the related parts in separate ziplock bags even labeling them where they go such as "airbox", "fairings, etc...

But I DID have a scare when all the parts were put back together. I went to start it up and NOTHING. The headlights and dashboard lit up and still no cranking at all. I was seriously starting to get scared and dreading taking apart the while bike again. After a 5 minute chill I happened to notice the neutral light wasn't on so I put it in neutral and bam started right up. Duhhhh!!!!

Sweet, we'll go for a ride sometime. But it'll only have to be a mile or so cuz it gets tiring pushing a one wheel bike around!!
