I was looking into buying my friends 86 VF1000R and was wondering if it was possible to fit a 2003 CBR954RR front end on it without any major mods. I know Hondas are known to be interchangeable with stuff like that as my 79 CR125R has the front forks off a 81 CR450R on it and an XR500 front wheel.
They may be a bit short, with the issue being the front fender/tire may contact the radiator under heavy braking. Lift the fronts on both bikes and measure the extended lengths and see what you get. Then do the same with weight on them. It will also depend on how much sag they both have. My stock setup had way too much sag, and, after setting it all up, the front looked like a dual purpose bike so I slid the tubes up the triples about 2". Once I start working on my 1000F again, I'll be looking at all that and, if need be, making a gullwing upper triple clamp so that I can drop the forks back down to raise the front. Haven't decided on what forks I want yet.....
I mostly wanted to swap in the 954RR front end because I want more modern suspension and I love the front brakes from the 954.
front ends Now you know why I used 2000 R1 forks for my frankenviffer conversion. Once mounted with RC51 triples, my fork top is right at the top of the triple with same attitude on bike. Check the VFRD database on forks for facts, but I THINK they are the same overall length at stock VFR forks. Also, many people use the 929/954 upper triple besuasse of the down offset, helping with short forks and clearance. Larry
