hey guys. I was looking at upgrading my brakes so I responded to Glafer and got a call back. I am going to call again in the a.m. and see about taking my bike down for them to do their deal. I will, of course, write a review as usual. Hopefully I can get them to snap some pics as they go and maybe get a decent working install how-to for them/us. I am off the next few days so I'll try to keep you guys posted as we do this and see how it works out.

Reg you are wonderful......good for you to possible get the deal of the century!! Will you also look into the speedbleeders like Bill did or see what Galfer suggests. Heck I bet Galfer could do a direct group buy if they were iterested.....that's a thought.

    Thanks again,

    Sam

Thanks Reg, let us know how it turns out.

Hey MtnRider, looks like we got the exact same parts in the kits. If you look at those two lines that have the female ends, those are the two that are suppose to run from the hardlines (on each side of the gas tank), right side gas tank going down to control valve banjo and from left side gas tank going down to secondary master for the linked brakes (not sure which banjo it connects to). You'll notice one of the two cables is way to short to accomplish that task. That's where I am with this.

Good news, the front brakes work great. Solid pressure at the front lever and rocking. It took a good 50 + miles to break in the new galfer pads and wave rotors on the front but she sure does stop quick now.

So I talked to Robert with Galfer and I am taking the bike down there today. They are going to have it for a couple days and the plan is to do a how-to video which I told him we'd be happy to put a link to or host here on the site. Hopefully we'll have you guys all fixed up soon and I'll have some new brake lines and do a writeup. I'll probably add wave rotors soon, too because I like the look of them. It'll be interesting to see how much appreciable difference there is in braking.

Well I hope the factory kit really does fit and if not can you ask what they would be willing to do to assist those of us with it?

Thanks for the update, looking forward to your post and video.

Punk! Galfers flaked out on doing the VFR and the XX last year.

You're such a cock blocker. [IMG]

It's a done deal and they seem genuinely interested in getting a good working tutorial to allay any more trouble with their product. I dropped a bug in their ear about possibly a group buy for the board but Robert is in brake tech so he probably doesn't have much to do with setting up sales. I got a couple pics while I was down there and will try to get some more when I go back. (I rode the train for the first time ever) I want to type a little story about the trip as per my usual.

well you got the first half about right you ARE a cock. hehe... I don't know about any blocking, though. Do you know Robert at Galfer said even though the install instructions don't exist that they have sold over 600 kits with very low complaints and not one single return. Where are all those VFR riders? They should all be HERE!

Im coming to this way late, and can't offer much help with the install. I tried to get Galfer to make me some lines for the front of my '03, they wouldn't commit to doing the work so i had Spiegler Performance back east make up a front kit for my linked set up. Basically they sent/made me the "T" piece that ausbill32 got in his kit. Mine fit up nicely, and works well.

The guys at Galfer have always been great to deal with, and im glad to see them stepping up and making this kit and its install more clear for their customers. I wish i would have been able to use them for my lines.

I looked at mine: you have this installed backwards that's why you had to grind it. The bend should face forward.

Well, what shop takes returns on special order parts? I don't doubt the amount of units they've sold, but they have very little end-user involvement. Those sales are to distributors/shops/international.

Never dealt with Robert. Mostly the chick in charge of customers service and with Paul, the California rep. After months of going round and round with him and his promises for "the VFR installation DVD", gave up. After about the 5th time he said he'd mail/bring the DVD, finally walked into is office only to find out, it didn't exist.

Not to mention Rich trying to get them to replace the (fresh from the factory) warped rotor for his BMW, AND the rear rotor for the XX that didn't fit. You probably noticed the nifty waves on the front and standard rotor on the rear.

Ask Robert how many of those they sold before he showed them the rotor didn't fit. They keep selling them too. haha

So that being said. Once past Paul the asshat and the chick with no follow-through, things couldn't have gone better. They took in Rich's BMW to diagnose the pulsing, since Paul had blamed the issue on the bike/installation. Plus the Blackbird to figure out why the rear brake was seized up.

The techs were great, the owner was great, WARPED rotor replaced and the BMW is braking better then Brembo and they were VERY thankful to find out the XX wave rotor was just plan wrong.... The replaced it with a standard Galfer plus refunded the money for the hassle...

Only things un-resolved are the brake kits for the VFR and the incomplete brake kit for the XX that Rich bought. They (the chick with no follow through) promised last year to take the XX and VFR in to create the install videos and fix the XX kit... Then stopped returning calls/emails again.

    Meh, time for a beer.

    Tori,

The galfer kit lines up exactly as you displayed with your Spieglar kit for the front the brakes. It's the linked brake cables for the front which I was specificly having trouble with. I like the red cables, they match well with the color on your bike. Thanks for showing us the Spieglar kit. Did your kit come with the linked cables for the front as well?

    Tev,

The reason why the clutch cable looks reversed is because I reversed it. The angle and the position of the banjo at the clutch reservoir would not seal when I had the lower banjo lined up correctly. The only way I could get it to seal at the reservoir was to flip it the cable the other direction which consequently flipped it at the lower end near the speed sensor. Once I did the flip I was able to get it to seal immediately. Believe me, I tried getting it to seal at the top reservoir many times sliding it left/right and tighting as much as possible without stripping it. I tried different washers too and came to the conclusion that it was simply the angle of the banjo. It wasn't until I flipped it that it sealed and once I did that it, it sealed right away. So I left it that way and just choose to grind down a little of the speed sensor casing in order to get the banjo down there to fit. The seal on the speed sensor remained so I'm not concerned at this point.

This is a really neat thread going. I have installed Galfer lines on other bikes with great improvement in braking. Never used the wave rotors though. Glad to see Galfer was willing to do something for everyone. Curious how this turns out, been thinking of doing this to by 04.

Got an e-mail from Robert. Seems most everything went ok. He said they needed my bike for a little longer to get the fitment just right so that they make sure to have the right kit and the right tutorial for everyone. He sent some teaser pics of the install...

I was pretty nervous leaving my bike with a stranger. She's never been away from me this long since I got her. I hope she's not scared.

Nice update. I see the lines are labeled, I hope they explain which line is which one because dang they are a pain.

    Thanks for keeping us posted.

It wasn't really a kit. I sent them my fronts only (just the piece pictured above.) So what you see is what i got.

It looks like that metal clip holding the 2 front crossover lines together is touching/rubbing on the top back of the fender........maybe it's just me......
