Just got a new to me 06 VFR with just under 4000 miles on the clock. Took it out today for a few hours and noticed some problems. Stalling on downshift and surging. I've read that upping the idle (it's at 1k now) and removing the slack in the throttle cable might help with these problems. Sad thing is, I'm not sure how to do either. The bike didn't come with an owners man., and I haven't found anything on the boards. Can anyone explain, help, or point me in the right direction?
    TIA

The idle adjustment is a knob on a flexible shaft tucked just barely under the fairing on the right side just above and forward of the oil filler cap.

To adjust throttle play loosen the lock nut on the top throttle cable at the grip. It's right at the point where the cable itself goes into the bent tube that goes to the throttle housing. There is an adjuster on the cable itself. After loosening the lock nut turn the adjuster to increase or decrease cable freeplay, then retighten the lock nut.

Great! Thanks for the info, I'll take care of that first thing in the AM and see if it helps.

It will help some, especially if it's stalling when downshifting, but I'm not sure how big a difference. Maybe it will fix things, I just really don't know. Mine idles around 1300rpm and I've never had any stalling problems at all. As to surging I think that's probably just inherent in fuel injected computer controlled engines to some extent. Many V-Strom owners complain about it and I've seen several posts here about it. I just ignore it on both of them. I think a lot of what people consider to be surging is actually a function of their right hand. Throttles are touchy on FI engines, especially at low RPM.

Just be careful when taking the slack out of the throttle cable. There is supposed to be 1/16"-1/4" of free play.

Again, thanks to everyone for all the great info. Did both this AM and went out for about an hour. Both problems seem to have been improved/fixed.
