So, a couple of weeks ago I rode up to Jasper and back with a fellow '02 owner. Along the ride we decided that we should see which bike is faster. We did a rolling start at about 6000 rpm in 1st gear. To be sure, and because its such fun, we did it 3 times.

Each time we did it my bike spanked his. I'd guess that by 100 mph I was 3-4 bike lengths ahead.

I was really surprised by this as his bike has 3 or 4 extra teeth on the rear sprocket but is otherwide completely stock. My bike has Micron exhaust and a PCIII. I've seen dyno runs from pipes and PCIII's and have only seen a few HP gain and wouldnt have expected such a difference.

Even if hte bikes rolled off the assembly line right next to each other you could expect that much difference. I would attribute it to the rider as much as anything. Anyhow, if you are worried about having the fastest you should get a 5th gen. They are the fastest!

Engine break-in could make a difference, too. You were smarter than he was during break-in!

His bike has 4 more teeth in the rear, he weighs at least 30 lbs less than me, I likely had 10-15 lbs more gear in my bags and it doesnt take a rocket surgeon to bang through the gears on a bike this slow.

I was just really surprised, I pulled away pretty hard. My buddy with an '02 ST4s (996 motor, about 20 hp more than the VFR) that is also geared down is not any faster than my '02 VFR.

Pipes + PCIII are the only explanation...

The VFRW myths surrounding the PCIII functionality, once again, rears it's ugly head.......these boxes are worth every cent.

Yup. The PCIII with a custom map from an experienced tuner make all the difference.

I'm going to have to look at the map to see whats up with it. FYI, I assume my bike has had a hard life, probably been down 3+ times before I got it and had the PCIII and Mircons on when I got it. May have been a hooligan who had it before me and rode it hard...

If your buddy trusts you maybe to be truly objective you could ride HIS bike and YOUR bike and compare times. Ride both of them exactly the same way that way you take out the rider in the equation.

We actually switched bikes after our little races and his bike definately felt slower but we didnt race again. I really dont think its rider cuz all you do is crack the throttle and shift. Different story on my TLR, I've gotta wait until 4th gear before I can crack the throttle with reckless abandon....

I might get cocky and start challenging other generations to straight-line runs. Dang near anyone could beat me in the corners.
