After waiting for 4 years, I have finally been able to set out and buy a 5th gen VFR. I started looking recently and couldn't find any here in the midwest that I liked so I opted to go to as far as Colorado (about 9 hours away). Thanks to this site, I found this '98 model in perfect condition near Denver with 7,500 miles. This bike doesn't have a scratch and is believed to have never seen water! I leave Friday night to go pick it up and I can't wait  My first VFR! 4 days and counting down...

Thats a beauty all right. I think more so with the VFR than any other bike ever made, it doesn't matter what year / model you have, they are all classics! Congratulations!

Wow that does look like your bike Zona! I am planning on changing out the exhaust on it though after I get it. I always wanted a VFR with a Staintune on it so I'm on the lookout for a high-exit on the market. This week has been complete torture! It's like when you were a kid staring at the presents under the Christmas tree waiting till Christmas day to open them up. :pout:

congrats on the bike. quite similar to a lot of ours on the board I would imagine. ;) Mine's a 98, red, with 2bros and I did have the givi screen but im using stock right now. I like the one on your bike, though. If you have the stock one can you ride a little with both and give a report on the wind noise, buffeting etc. I'm trying to find a good compromise between the givi and stock. I want decent looks but also decent protection without having to ride in full tuck.

After about 24 hours of driving, I finally managed to get the '98 VFR back to the pad. Long drive but well worth it. The bike is pristine! I never would have expected to find one this nice. I first test drove it in Colorado and was a little disappointed in the power it was putting out in the low end as compared to a '99 model with 19,200 miles that I had driven a couple weeks ago. That bike also had a PCII which mine doesn't have. Today I got a temporary tag and took it for a spin for the first time back here in Kansas. I don't know exactly what changed but this thing will scoot! I did a low RPM WOT through first planting my rear against the seat cowl, then hit second and pulled the wheel off the ground unexpectedly, just shifting normally without popping the clutch hard. It felt much more powerful. The only thing I can figure is that the air is thinner in Colorado because of elevation and made for less available power. It felt as powerful as the first bike I test rode. I don't know, but better for me! Besides that, the ride is excellent. It's stable on the highway, rides smooth, stable in corners, sounds great, plenty of power (for me), it catches people's attention, and it's a more unique bike than most other bikes out there... is there a downside to owning a VFR??? I grinned the whole time I rode it. 3000 RPM seems to make a real nice tone from the engine I found. I didn't really even want to rev it over that because i enjoyed the exhaust note so much at that speed. It was music to my ears. I love this thing!

BTW, I am still looking for a high exit staintune. When I get it, the pipe that is shown in the pictures will be up for sale. It's a Two Bros carbon and it's in excellent shape. I've always wanted a VFR with a Staintune though...

Looks great! Congrats. I know what you're going through. I had a torturous week recently waiting to go pick mine up. I even said to hell with trailering it back and rode the 500 miles in the rain on it. It was great. You'll like the Staintunes. Mine had them when I got it. With the baffles out it sounds like a sports car.

I think the biggest complaint with the VFR is the weight. I wouldn't mind if it lost 30 lbs. It just feels like a cow to me, but it does seem much more stable so you just take the good with the bad...

That would be the altitude and the resulting thinner air exactly as you thought. I was also amazed at the difference between riding in Wichita (where I lived for a few years) and touring through Colorado. I couldn't get the front wheel off the ground it was soo weak.

Congrats on the new ride, it looks amazing!

Ok, maybe I spoke a little soon on the comfortability part. After riding about 20-30 minutes, my right hand goes numb. I thought that this bike would improve that problem from my last bike but evidently not. This morning after my commute to work, my fingers felt like they had springs in them or something because every time I tapped my fingers on a surface, there was a vibrating sensation in my fingers like if you flicked a small spring and felt the vibrations afterwards. It sounds weird, I know. I have noticed that the bar ends are carbon look (probably aluminum underneath) which may make me feel more vibration than the stockers would have. I really didn't expect there to be as much presssure on my wrists as there is. What have you guys done that works? Bar risers, Throttlemeister, lower profile seat, gel grips??? I'm not really looking to throw down a bunch of money right off the bat to fix this problem. I'm sure some of you have experienced this so I just want to know what you've done. Thanks in advance.

I have the same prob sometimes. I think what helps the most is going to the gym and working out. Building you back and abs helps especially if you sit with good posture. I have helibars which I think helps some, but they were on the bike when I got it. Try to keep the normal lumbars curve in your lower back when you ride instead of hunching. It feels weird at first, but you can feel the wrist pressure ease up quickly just from that. Other than that, I don't know what else you can do.

It has to be position related. I have the same problem. Put Genmar risers on and it helped some. Have Helibars ordered and hope they help more. Going to put gel grips on when I change the bars and I'm going to put some vibration dampening barends on at the same time. It's weird though because I test rode the new ZX-14 last Saturday for about 30 minutes and didn't have that problem. There were other problems because it leans farther over but not the hand issue.
