Welcome aboard. Sounds like you have a tough choice between the 3.
The seat and risers are the most popular mods. There are so many others that are kinda personal preference. I will let the other 6th gen members mention those.

    Yeppers, Drewl said it best!
I vote for one with ABS.
No "mods" here (I'm a "rocker") so I am useless to you for advice on changes!

If you are planning on riding more than 100 miles at a time I would say invest in some type of throttle control. I have a simple $20 NEP throttle lock and it took all of about 3 minutes to install with no modification needed. Throttlemeister seems to be very popular and sturdy product. Mine is not as attractive or durable like the throttlemeister but it does the trick and operates with the flick of your thumb. Another popular mod is to modify that stock exhaust. There are several threads around that discuss everything from removing the stock baffle to cutting the stock pipes shorter. If you are looking to achieve a more powerfull throaty exhaust note this is a relatively easy way without spending the $800+ to order aftermarket exhausts. Depending on your height and the way the air hits your body you may want to check out some aftermarket wind screens. Many people here would also probably agree with me when I tell you to consider changing the tires (if stock) to a better tire. I am anxiously awaiting my Michelin Pilot Road 2 tires to come.

You'll want a new wind screen. The stock screen is only good for short people under 5'7. I chose the Zero Gravity Double Bubble. As for the exhaust, there's nothing like the $800 variety exhaust purchase! I understand the cost savings on the modification but those after market cans sticking out the back of the bike are priceless! Next, you'll want a seat. there is much debate over which kind to get but my butt told me Sargent is the best for these bikes. Makes the long ride much more enjoyable.

As for the bike choice, I'd go for the 2002 no ABS. I'm just old fashion about the brake set up, no real reason why you shouldn't choose the ABS bike. I think i read somewhere that the 2002 have a different ignition mapping so read around the site to make sure. Also whichever bike you choose make sure they preformed the electrical recall BEFORE you buy it! It's a free recall but takes a few days to complete.

    Welcome and good luck!

I'd wait until you put a few miles on the bike before you consider risers -- give your wrists time to get used to the stock bars. I put risers on my Moto Guzzi V11 Sport and found more weight concentrated on my butt which reduced the seat comfort. I put 800 miles on my 2004 the day I bought it and had no problems.

Well guys I picked up the 2002 with ABS with 3750 miles. I had to drive thru 3 major freeways at around 70-80 just to stay with traffic. Considering this was my first time really riding in 10-12 years I did ok. The guy Ibought the bike showed me on his training bike (he does bike training as a side job) how to get back get myself back in the saddle.

My current biggest problem is not stalling the damm thing I need to get my cluth release back into pratice.

My biggest gripe were after a 40 mile ride was
    1. My wrists got a little numb
    2. the windshield did almost nothign for me I am 6'1"
    3. The 707 helmet I got from a local shop was too damm noisey.

Things on my shopping list are
    1. Sergant seat
    2. Risers
    3. New windshield
    4. Fender Eliminator
    5. Someway to carry my 17" laptop to work.
