I have an 86 interceptor with a fuel line that goes straight from the fuel valve on the tank and into the carbs. I was wondering if the bike had a fuel pump and if the fuel filter had to be on the bike. Currently ripping the carbs apart because I was informed a float is probably stuck. I changed the oil, started it up and it will only idle pretty rough with choke on. If I take the choke off or give it gas it immediately stalls. There was some dark smoke at first coming out of the exhaust but it seemed to go away and just idle horribly. There is no fuel filter on the bike but in the manual it shows a filter then some canister the fuel lines go into. My bike has no canister... thought it was a missing fuel pump but I really cant find it in the manual...
no fuel pump The 86 vf500f dosn't have a fuel pump ( i also have an 86 vf500f) , how long did the bike sit before you tried to start it? From your description sounds like your carbs are gacked up, most likely your pilot jets aas if I understand rigt they are responsible for idling. I would say if you are getting gas to the carbs, that you need to take tem off and do a good cleaning, then adjust on the bench put back on bike and start it, adjust the idle and sync them. should run nice after all that . Oh, and as others have suggested on this board, spray wd-40 around the rubber boots where the carbs go into the engine to make sure you do not have leaking boots (your idle will change if there are leaks) Will R Seattle, WA.
