Hello fellow VFR riders. I'm new to the site. I bought an 87, all white vfr a year ago with 20k miles on it. I saw one in my high school parking lot in 1988 and told myself someday I'd have that motorcycle. Well it took twenty years but I got it. First bike ever and I couldnt see buy anything else. It's in excellent condition but I'm lookin to gather enough body parts so I can change it's look when I want. My question is will the side panels, the ones between the tail panels and the large engine cover ones, from an 86 vfr fit on an 87. There is a set of both L/R on ebay and I wanna jump on them if they'll fit. They look the same as my 87's But I thought I'd ask someone who might know. Thanks TL

body-wise, the 86-89 vfr's are all the same. if you need bodywork, look around the website here for Chuck Crites and his company called Cobalt Racing. he's the only person/company/whatever else that still makes ALL the bodywork for these 1st gen VFR's, and he even has some custom stuff (tail sections, fairing stays, wheel conversion parts) that he makes for these bikes, too.

    Hello:

Actually, that is not the case. The '88 VFR750FJ (RC24) and the '89 VFR750FK (RC24) have different ABS body parts from the '86 and '87 models (700 and 750).

The '88 and '89 have a three-piece "main fairing." There are two side panels, and a "belly pan." The '86 and '87 have a two-piece "clam shell" design.

Also, both the '88 and '89 have a two-position windscreen, "hi/lo." So, the windscreen attaches differently to the front cowl; that is to say, the front cowl is different.

Also, the little side panels (covering battery on the right, and the fuel pump on the left) are actually a little different. Yes, they will fit, but the vent is in a different location. The vent is the same on the ‘86/’87, and the same on the ‘88/’89.

The only part, which is exactly the same across the '86, '87, '88 and '89 is the tailpiece. When I say "exactly the same," I mean the mold that made the part is the same. They carry different part numbers due to the different colors and decals.

Yes, the rear seat cowl will fit all four models, but the '88 and '89 have grab bars on the rear, and the rear seat cowl has little cutouts to accommodate the grab bars. I took the grab bars off my '89 and, therfore, am using a rear seat cowl made for the '86/'87 (no cutouts).

    Aha ...

By Golly, I think you're right.

One of the things that bugs me about some "private" sources of VFR information is that they often have little mistakes in 'em.

I just noticed my 86 has the reliefs in the seat for the grab handle. Do all 86-87's have these?

Awesome info guys. Can I go directly to Cobalt racing to have a set of the front sides and upper fairing made or am I resigned to waiting for VFRchuck to put another set on ebay? Also will the front fender from an 86 work on an 87? Last but not least I've heard from different sources that there is some sort of chronic electrical thing that tends to go out on the old interceptors. I cant recall what it is though. Is this true and if so should I keep an eye out for a spare one of these whatever it may be just in case it happens to my 87 with 25K miles on it. Oh yeah, who's hacking Army86?

I went direct, he said to paypal him, set up the transaction, paid and am waiting (JUST ordered last week). He hasn't posted on ebay in months.

As far as I know, yes. I don't know of any differences in the front.

The Regulator rectifier..... they go out on Lots of bikes, not just interceptor/VFR's. You can get a new one on ebay, they pop up all the time.

    Questions answered. Yeah-yeaaah!

Thanks Senior Member Frodus, you answered all my questions and dem sum. Soon as I gather up 8 hundo, I'll be giving VFRChuck a ring. I see a rectifier on ebay right now so I'll probably scoop it up, just in case.

I was bidding on the side panels too. But they went for too much for me. No biggy, I just wanted them for the same reason.
