Hey guys, I just bought a 1986 VFR 750 and there is a slight leak coming out of the bottom of the thermostat housing. Also, it will begin to over-heat when sitting still in traffic for a while. Any suggestions on where I can get parts for this bike? Also, there seems to be a small amount of oil blowing into/out of the air box. Any ideas? Thanks for your time. Ken

for the coolant leak, youll probably want to replace the thermostat housing gasket. that sounds to be the culprit there.

as for your overheating issue, these bikes do tend to get pretty warm in traffic and riding around surface streets (non-freeway). how hot does it actually GET?

    check for the following things:

    (1) coolant leak (well we already know this is a problem. replace the gasket and get that radiator filled up. maybe even use some Red Line Water Wetter in there, too).

    (2) check to see if the radiator cooling fan is working. make sure it comes on when the bike heats up. if not, put a 12v power source to the fan motor, and if it doesnt run, replace it. if the motor does run, check the fan switch on the left side of the radiator (as it sits on the bike).

    (3) if all that stuff is fine, make sure the water pump is working and circulating coolant as it should. verify there are no clogs in the coolant system as well.

as for oil in the airbox, im not sure on that one. clean the areas around the airbox up so any oil leaks will show up more. check the valve cover on the front head to make sure its not leaking oil.

your best parts sources that i know of off the top of my head are ebay, servicehonda.com and powersportspro.com (and maybe ronayers.com for some stuff)

    VFR overheating

Chris, thanks for the info. It does seem to be the gasket around the thermostat that is leaking, I checked it today. It hasn't gotten hot enough for the fan to come on, but I will check that as well. Th bike doesn't leak oil anywhere, I had just seen some in the top of the air box. All of the gaskets look good. Anyway, thanks again for thr tips. I'll keep you posted. Ken
