I bought my '98 used, second owner. I moved onto a dirt road two years ago and it's been killing me to ride on the dirt. So I've been riding my "dirt" bike and the VFR sat. Now, the mice destroyed my baby. So I guess I should have just ridden it on the dirt!

My first problem with it ever. So I came here looking for some advice/resources, and wow! Wish I would have looked for y'all sooner.

Hoping I can get it back on the road.

it's absolutely scandalous how often sensible people blame small, innocent, essentially innocuous rodents which must chew to stay alive for their problems.

if u had just surrounded your VFR with steel mesh it never would have happened

    just scandalous!

Nope, built a nest in the air filter and peed all over my throttle bodies and engine. I'm at the mercy of the mechanics. They say the engine is shot. Trying to figure out if I can swap it with a 2000 engine at the local salvage yard.

Engine Shot??? I wonder if your mechanic needs a good engine for HIS VFR? Unless they chewed all the wiring, I can't imagine what they could have done to ruin the engine. A nest in the airbox wouldn't ruin the motor. Even if you tried to start it and sucked it into the intake, it could still be fixed. How long did it sit?

The 98 and the 00 differ in that the 00 has a special cold start auto idler and a "wiser" ECU.

welcome to the site, and get your bike back from those mechs. I'd take a look at that thing myself. I find it pretty hard to believe that mice could have ruined and engine... maybe a ducati, but not a VFr. hehe See if you can get you bike back and pay them for the damage they (the mechs not the mice)have done, take a good look yourself and post up pics and let's see if we can get this worked out for you... I'm guessing a thorough cleaning and changing of the fluids and then checking the wiring very well would serve you well. I ride a 98 and I ride the damn thing like I stole it most of the time, and I feel like the engine is bullet proof.

Those mechanics are taking you for a ride! That is NO reason to total out that motor....because of some mouse pee and a nest.....hells no!

Oh, and sorry for calling you bud earlier......I meant "my lady," as they would say in old times.

I still don't believe the engine is gone, at least not for mice damage... but if you really really want another engine, I saw this on ebay today: eBay Motors: 98 HONDA VFR 800 ENGINE MOTOR 13200 M. USED #5000 (item 380060145690 end time Sep-10-08 13:19:06 PDT)

I'm supposed to pick up the "engine kit" from the salvage yard on Saturday and bring it to the bike shop. I have to pay $1000.00 up front and they'll give me $200.00 back for the old parts.

The bike's at a Honda dealer with a supposedly good rep in this area. This is the second shop I've had it at as the first guy wanted $1600 just in parts to fix the throttle bodies.

One of my co-workers AND the guy at the salvage yard are suspicious too. I just don't know what I'm looking for or how to tell if the engine is shot. The mechanic said I'd have more money in rebuilding my engine than swapping out with another.

It's been sitting for two years. Actually, about 18 months.

Thanks for all the support/advice. But if I do pick the bike up, I still have a bike that won't run. :-(

ARE these shops taking advantage of you....or do you have the first VFR ever DESTROYED ????? .......by some rodent pee from a very small , innocuous rodent

    Hard to believe.

IF acidic, corrosive, caustic, moist, smelly, unsanitary, disgusting (but it's ALL natural!) animal feces COULD cause any real damage to ur engine, then MAYBE, MAYBE one cylinder could rust inside the engine bore and make it not turn over, MAYBE..........

Even if you had a problem it might be corrected without engine replacement. Probably only need cleaning of parts.

after you get the bike back people here can help you through most anything to fix your bike if you're able to do some work and have quality tools.

    Dubious Honor

I now have the dubious honor of being the first VFR engine 'destroyed' by mouse mess.

I got a co-worker who used to be a mechanic to go w/me to the shop. One of the intake manifolds was totally destroyed, so there was no way to get a good seal anymore. There was actually solid stuff in the manifold. I would have had to get a new jug, gaskets, pistons, rings, and maybe re-bore the cylinder. And who knows what all else.

It is cheaper in parts and labor to just swap out the engines. I picked up the 2000 engine today. Hopefully in about a month she'll be runnin.

Thanks for all the advice. I'm glad I brought my co-worker with me....at least I know I'm not getting screwed.

oh well. at least you will have a working bike again and a good story to tell. maybe you'll have to get one of those exhaust plugs like they sell for dirtbikes for when you park your VFR.

I lived on a farm ,years ago, and one spring found a mouse nest in my air box. It was a mess to clean up. After a few hours cleaning and a new air filter everything worked fine.
