5th Gen Side Stand Switch Question

    99 VFR side stand.
    I think the switch might be bad or just screwed up from the get go as I bought the bike used. As I know a switch will open and close a circuit. When the bike is on and in gear you put the side stand down it opens the circuit turning the bike off. When the stand is up it closes the circuit and you should be able to have the bike in gear with the clutch in and the bike should start. Right? My bike used to let me start it in this fashion but not anymore.
    Is stand up, in gear, hold in clutch, press start, no start a safety feature or is the switch screwed up and needs to be replaced?

    I just had to pony up 2 bills for a new rear tire and am a little strapped.
    Any ideas?

    Sounds like the clutch safety switch. I don't know much about them, but have read that they may stick, not allowing a start. Make sure you are pulling the lever all the way back to the bars. Some aftermarket levers will still operate the clutch but not have enough travel to operate the switch. Listen for a "click" when you engage the lever.

    It may also be wiring or fuse related.

    I did just put some Pozzo adjustable levers on the bike but I diden't figure there was a switch in the clutch that could be the culprit. I will look into this.

    I have heard of aftermarket levers causing switch issues before. Check your front brake light too.

    Is there any way to adjust the switch? Its probably not smart to disable it but its a safety issue if I have to get the bike started again in gear in a hurry! I got the levers just so I could adjust the clutch pull.

    I put on Pazzo racing levers and at click #1 it would not engage the clutch switch. Good call. I moved it to click #2 and the world is a happy place again.:thumbsup:

    If anyone doesn't have a set of these they are well worth the money. On my VeFeR I got the long red with black adjuster, Real Cool!!! At about $180 (Free shipping) a set. They are pricey but REAL NICE!!!

    Google them, there is a deal right now (I dont have the link) that you can pick up the levers and a free set of grips for the price listed above.
