Hey all, I just purchased a really clean VFR800 (2004), UPGRADED from a Yamaha R6 (2005). I've never owned a VFR before, and no one in my area owns one either so I'd like to ask a few questions here about some of my concerns. 1. If you cruise around 6,500-7,000rpms do you experience any VTEC "on/off" surges? It would make sense to me that if I'm just on the border line it would do that. 2. The gas tank, when you open the lid, is it a large gaping hole or should there be an insert inside that make the hole slightly smaller? My R6 has a guard in there that makes the inlet a little smaller, and has some billet holes drilled in it. 3. Hehe, is the clock suppose to be on when the key is out? 4. Mileage, I've been driving around pretty excitedly, testing out speed, taking turns aggressively to test out the suspension compared to the R6, but I only got about 155 miles before the little gas light just started blinking red. The R6 made it to about 225 before I REALLY had to stop somewhere. The R6 is an inline-4 but it was also a lot more aggressive and has 40 more horsepower. 5. When it's cold (and this is a generally self-explanatory question) does (~114 degrees F) and you accelerate through 1st and 2nd, does it feel like you have no power? I'm pretty sure this is normal, I'm just asking in case. 6. I was cruising around for about 90 miles at about normal speed, not a whole lot of downtime at red lights and I noticed the engine temp was about 215-220 @ ~85 degrees air temp. The R6 usually would run the fan and try and keep it under 180 as much as possible. I know the radiators are on the sides and not the front so I'm curious -- is this a normal riding temp? When should I stop to avoid overheating? 250? 7. Never heard a VTEC before (I hate Honda cages) mine makes like a little bursting sound, in conjunction with the obvious exhaust noise change, should you hear it switch over besides the exhaust? Just to be clear, I'm not complaining at all about the bike, I love everything about it, I'm just a worrier and I don't want anything to progressively ruin any single part. I plan on replacing the spark plugs and the air filter with a K&N so that might iron out some of the issues I may or may not be having. Thanks for reading and replying. BTW, VFR's F@#$ing ROCK.
1. Can't remember what the revs were on the '04 model, but do remember that VTEC cuts in a few hundred RPM higher than it cuts out. - End result is it doesn't cut in and out all the time if you are riding right on that RPM. 2. Err... Maybe a picture would help us tell you whether what you got is "normal". I can't imagine how you could possibly change the filler cap region of the tank, but you never know! 3. Yes - but you can't change it. 4. No idea. 5. It doesn't get cold where I live! 6. Every Honda I've had (three now) tended to run "hot" compared to friend's Kawasakis / Suzukis. Needing to convert C to F... Cruising along, mine ('06 6th gen) runs at around 175F, being ridden "hard" or stop/start traffic it peaks at around 222F. 7. I've heard it rudely described as sounding like "a leaf stuck in the airbox". I certainly noticed an "in-take" noise with the stock pipes on. Welcome to the forum and enjoy your bike!
