Do the different years sound different?

    Hi;

    My first post here....

    I've loved VFR's for years and always wanted a mid 80's red one with white wheels. I rode one on a Honda free ride and fell in love with the engine note!!!! I've always wanted to get one and put a sport pipe on to advertise that amazing motor.

    My question....... do the newer ones sound the same? I've heard a few newer models and they don't seem to have that "high strung V8" tone to them (and they aren't red anymore either) :(. The salesman says it's just the exhaust...... I'm a little skeptical..... have they changed the firing order or something over the years?

    Thanks;

    Neil Meckelborg

    they sound a little different. the stock bike will sound a bit like a sewing machine, but SilverSurfer800 put some leo vinces on his 6g and it sounds bitchin. one thing different in the 6 and 5th gen sound is the gear driven cam, though. when I first got my 5g I didn't know what the whining noise was. i thought something was wrong until I logged on here to learn about the VFR... as far as the older bikes go, they sound pretty darn close, but I'm sure a trained ear could detect lots of little things...

    Hello and welcome to the club! Looks like Reggie already answered your question. The gear driven cams (prior to 2002) create a whine.....a beautiful whine that is.

    Where are you located?

    And that cam whine turns into an absolute howl at upper rpm's. As for exhaust, nothing sounds as badass as my '94 with the 2 Bros full system; it sounds like something that turns laps at Talledega.:biggrin1:

    Rev: The salesman that sold me my machine has a 94 with a Two Bros. full system and, you are absolutely correct about the sound. The best word I can think of is "menacing."

    Nice!

    I'm in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada (to reply to an earlier post).

    That's good to know. I loved the one i rode (probably a mid-90's), but was concerned that they started making them run more like an ST-1100 later on. I owned one of those as well, great tourer but just to bulky for much fun.

    I recently re-aquired the VFR bug when a local fellow put a sport pipe on his mid-90's VFR. Damn, does that sound good!!!!!! I'm sure he did it this summer, because I'd have recognized that sound from miles away. It's such a breath of fresh air after hearing all the inline 4 bikes.

    I'm glad they haven't changed that, now I can look for the newest one I can find. I just wish they still came red with the white wheels, that's what I'd really like to see (except with the gear drive cams).

    Thanks;

    Neil

    My understanding is the RC24, RC36 and RC46 all have 180 cranks. The made for racing RVF RC30 and RVF RC45 have 360 deg cranks although I know a guy with a Gen 1/2 who installed a 360 race Crank which did sound different. The Gen 5 VFR800 has the motor from the RVF RC45 but with a 180 degree crank for its better mid range.

    Think the exhaust note with stock exhaust sounds dull but a Gen 6 with spuds out Staintunes and motad headers sounds like a small block and can sound as good as any previous catless gen although admit the best VFR I've ever heard was a 4th Gen with a Tingate end can.
