In the next month I am looking to purchase a previously owned VFR800. I have heard different opinions on the VTEC feature. I like the 99-01 models and the price of a good used example are in my price range. There are a few 02-04 bikes in my range as well. I think the styling of current model is fantastic. Are there any reliability concearns with the VTEC feaure? How abrupt is the transition between two valves and four? Does periodic maintenance cost more or required more often on one vs. the other. I plan on commuting year-round on the bike as well as two-up weekend get-aways. Can anyone help me make up my mind? Thanks
The only concerns I've seen about VTEC are from those who don't have it, but I may have missed something. I have it on both a 2002 VFR800 and a 2001 S2000. Both work fine. As for how sudden the transition it's like flipping a toggle switch at 6800 RPM (for the VFR) to get a few more horses. Reminds me of by old RD350. Ride before you buy to see if it bothers you. YMMV.
