Hey guys, just got an 84 750 today and was wondering about a few things. What should I be looking for when I take her apart? I read about the apparent cam chain issues, but what should I be seeing? Is there a specific model number run that will tell me anything? I've also read about a supposed 'Oil Mod' but never came across what it entailed exactly.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. I tried digging around in the archives but couldn't find too much on my specific year of 750, but I'll keep searching.

I got it for cheap and it needs some work, and a new paint job lol, but I think it'll turn out ok. I'll post some pics asap.

    Thanks guys!

Ok, so I just cleaned her up a bit and have started doing little things here and there. I know I need to give the carbs a solid cleaning, but for now I just sprayed some carb medic in and tried to fire it up. It took some cranking, but the motor eventually caught and started to run (via aide of Ether). It's pretty cool here (11*C) right now, so I can imagine that doesn't help things. The bike won't idle or go past four thousand RPM, but it sounds alright. There's a hissing noise coming from the left side though, is that normal? The previous owner had slow-sided it on the rad cap, which I will be replacing, but I can't see any leaks or cracks.

My real question is this though; I'm taking apart the rear brake cylinder due to the pistons being seized, and I noticed the dust rings had perished. I'm going to be replacing them, but should I also replace the seal rings (the thicker ones deeper in) as well? I most likely will cause they aren't very expensive, but just curious.

I'll take some more pictures and maybe a video tomorrow.

    Thanks guys!

PS - What's the best way to get those carbs out of there? :s

Hey there, congrats on the new bike.
As far as I know, the issue is not as much with the chains or tensioners as much as "the oil pump takes it's sweet time" to pump to the rear cylinder head's cams when starting, causing accelerated lobe wear. The oil mod will correct this, you can buy kits on eBay or plumb it up yourself with racing accessories.

As for the Carb removal process, first off, Don't remove the adapter plate, take them all off as one assembly. Just loosen the two clamps on each intake and disconnect the fuel line. You may or may not want to leave the accelerator cables attached.

    Good luck!

Here's the idiotic wisecrack i wudda made back then: "You have far better bikes to ride now (SV) so why take on a project to 'restore' a bike that's nothing special, nearly ancient and represents a problematical Honda engine manufacturing or design failure, not sure which. Restoring flawed bikes is anti-Darwinian. Better to fix your attention on the much improved VFR unless you fancy retrograde tech.
