Guys - Was out the other day and noted that the engine temp was around 210 degrees even though it wasn't real hot out.

Reading another thread, it seems that until 220+ or so, the fan won't come on. Even with the bike shut off and the ignition switch on, the fan didn't come on, but the temp only got as far as 222 degrees.

The cooling system was flushed and thermostat replaced last year.

I take it that this is normal? Also, just to check, is there a way to cause the fan to come on (bypass the temp sensor)?

    Thanks!

    Steve

to bypass temperature switch touch the one black wire attached to it to ground, and (with key ON of course) the fan should start.

a manual switch to turn on the fan will set you back about $4, while the Honda replacement runs around $55 and isn't very reliable......as you have discovered!

I know what you mean about your bike gettin hot. I have a 2008 VFR and I was riding home today. The bike said it was 96 outside air temp. But my motor temp was up to 232 degrees. Way to hot!! especially moving 90 miles an hour with no one in front of me. Coolant level is good, oil level is good, I don't get it!!!! Any I ideas.

I talked to a guy how had a 98 VFR and he tlod me to wire in a switch to the fan to shut it off at speed on the fwy. Anyone else do that?? I understand what he ment because I would see that the fan would slow air flow. But the fan is on the left radatior. the right should be free and clear!! Any Ideas???

That does seem hot. Even mine appeared to stop at around 221 once I shut the bike off. You have an '08 so I wouldn't think it's the switch. Mine lasted 10 years before it acted up.

I did check and see if my fan was functional as per the instructions above, and it is.

Air bubble in the cooling system? Think I read in another thread about taking the coolant cap off and starting the bike to let air out.

You could have air in the system, a poor sealing radiator cap, old/depleted coolant needing a flush, a sticking T-stat, bent radiator fins, or all of the above.

The fan should come on prior to 220F....217-219 I thought it was....I always forget. The fan won't do much good coming on after the bike is shut off anyways, as the coolant is not being circulated.
