I am the proud owner of a 1999 VFR that I bought new. I've got about 106,000 km on her by touring every summer and commuting. About 3 years ago I encountered an FI light issue where it would light up dimly at first and then get brighter, it would also blink out with the signal lights. I took to the dealership and a bad ground was finally diagnosed with some burnt connectors. They cleaned it up and said the next time I will require a new wiring harness. This summer on a trip through Yellowstone the light started again but got gradually worse as the trip went on. The engine would cut out 3 or 4 times a day where I would have to turn the key off and the engine would re-light meanwhile traveling on an Interstate highway. So now I have to fix the problem. The error cpdes indicate MAP sensor and AT problems but when I use the turn signals or high beam the engine hesitates si I suspect a ground again. I'm going to take the body panels off and use dielectric grease on every connector and ground lug on the bike. Is there any other suggestions that might help? It sounds like a lot of the old grounding issues so maybe an additional ground strap is required. Thanks all
There are loads of threads on this. Main place for problems is the earth block, which is just fwd of the RR. Its a block with loads of earth wires going in, all interconected by a sort of fork clip inside block. After many years of problems with mine, I have finally disposed of the block, joined 3 or 4 of the wires to each other with a eye end crimp, and then joined the whole lot together with a screw and nut. I also took an extra earth wire to the chassis. So far no more problems.
Thanks for the help I've taken the back fairing off and found the RR however I can't find the earthing block. I was expecting a grounding lug of some sort on the frame but perhaps you're talking about a large taped set of wires located near the connectors to the RR. Thanks again Michael
Yes, its all wraped up with tape, and just seems to be in the loom. Here is a picture that gives you an idea.
I followed your avise on the grounding block and sure enough found a few burnt terminals so I joined everything all together and ran a new ground. I had a nice 600km ride today and the bike was flawless. Thanks again your help is appreciated
