I never thought I'd have to describe something like this, but here we go!

As most of you know I have a 1997VFR.

Today I was practicing hanging-off in a parking lot when a weird "grindy, buzzy" noise started when turning to the left. When I would have the bike leaned over going through a turn the noise would start. Its intermittant though...doesen't always do it either.

So I ride the 97 home no issues, power, shifiting is all normal. I pull off the fairings fire the bike up and when I lean it over to the left the noise starts. It sounds like its coming form the clutch slave or the rotor. But don't quote me on that. I'm just saying it sounds like it. ANd it is intermittant still, comes and goes.

I've never heard a noise like this and am unsure what to even think. Has ANYONE had this before??

Also, all fluids are fine and have been changed recently so that would be odd if it was the hydralic clutch fliud.

This bike is well taken care of, but I checked the obvious stuff anyway. The only thing is it seems to do it a bit more when the bike has somewhat cooled down or is not really hot and when I pumped the clutch lever it appeared to set off the sound. Could be coincidence, becasue it does it without touching the clutch lever.

Thanks for you help guys and gals.

I was going to say chain noise, but good hearing protection will also make the noises go away. :thumb:

Only in turn, one direction, makes my first thought a wheel bearing. If you're not convinced it's from the engine, it may be worth a look.

Was that panel-off listen static or on the move?

Just to be clear; with the fairings off and the bike leaned to the left, is the bike stationary or are you riding it around when it makes the noise? Off the top of my head, I'm wondering if the clutch engagement pushrod is vibrating, or perhaps spinning. It might be worth pulling off the slave cylinder and taking a look at the end of the pushrod to see if it looks like it has been misbehaving. If it is possible to slide the pushrod out of the engine (I think it should be), it might have some marks on it somewhere if it has been spinning or vibrating.

Actually RVFR the feelers have been removed and my knee was down lol!

So I know it wasn't the feelers!

I was practicing corenering on lunch break during and MSF class when this happened.

    Lgn and Vlad:

The bike was stationary and made the noise too?

But check this out. I rode the bike home from class and it did not make the sound. No power issues, no clutch issues, nothing!

So on Squirrelman's and the mechanic I go too recommendation, I pulled off the cover to the front sproket and no issues. The bolt is not loose or anything. And Lgn I pulled the push rod out and everthing seems fine. Its not chewed up or anything.

This all happened Saturday. Now if it was a bearing I would expect to feel it when riding. Like a wobble or crappy handeling. Also, I have new tires on the bike and I would think the mechanic would catch messed up bearings on the front.

This is the real kicker, the bike is now not making the noise?????

I plan on practicing again this Sunday with frends, so if it come back, we'll all be listening.

The mechanic and I did discuss the possibility that the frame sliders I installed; the rod that goes into the engine could be vibrating on the frame were it comes out. He's heard some odd noises from them, so that could be it becasue engines that are knocking, pinging, etc. generally keep making the noise.

Thanks for your help guys, much appreciated.
