Hi. I just joined this forum because I'm thinking about buying a VFR and am interested in learning more about them. I am currently riding a '99 BMW R1100RT that I really like. It's got 70k miles on it, so I'm getting ready for a new or newer bike. I've ridden the new BMW R1200ST and found that I really like the more sport oriented riding style and the bike is really great. Only problem is the high price of BMW's, both initial purchase and parts & service. Much as I like 'em, I just can't afford them anymore.

I recently purchased a used '97 CBR 600 F3 in great condition. I simply love this bike and have been riding it more lately than my Beemer. This experience coupled with what I have read in various MC publications has led me to consider the VFR as a replacement bike. Sounds like a really nice ride and appears to be reliable as far as I can tell.

Since I probably won't buy a new one, my question is what years would you recommend and why? I like the idea if a late model bike with fuel injection and I like ABS brakes for street riding. I will also want the side bags since they have been so handy on my BMW. I don't plan to "knee drag" on the VFR, that's what I've got the CBR for. I plan on putting some long miles on the VFR and using it to commute the 35 miles one way to work every day except when it snows or get's below 25 degrees.

    Any suggestions will be appreciated.

    Thanks,
    Wayne

    Need Advice (long reply)

Hi Wayne - you're a much more experienced rider and owner than I am, but here's my experience with my new (to me) 2004 VFR. I am the first owner, bought it with 33 miles last week. It has 250 on it now. As my first street bike (I grew up on Honda ATC's and dirt bikes) I have nothing but great things to say about it. My neighbor just bought both a new Gixxer liter bike, and the new R1 50th Anniversary and commented "that's a sweet bike" about my VFR. I considered the ST2 and BMW's before the VFR - and rode both, but loved the VFR. Sporty enough to not feel like I am on a GoldWing, but touring enough to not kill my wrists, etc. The only opportunity so far is the seat - needs more cushion. Or I need more cheeseburgers!
