I'm riding to New York next week for a few days. Staying with a friend, who has no parking spot. Anyone have any tips on where to park for a few days in Manhattan? (preferably close to W 20th street, and hopefully not too expensive)

    Thanks!

Just find a parking garage close by that is staffed 24 hours. A disc lock is a must since they'll hold your keys (conveniently keep the disc lock key to yourself).

If you're near the hotel district, you'll find big garages that'll server multiple hotels and office buildings, that's what I used near time square last year. Cost 40 bucks per bike per night. Yah pricey, but I guarantee anything parked on the street won't be there in the morning.

They won't give you a "spot" they'll squeeze the bike in somewhere, just make sure it's not in any blind spots. If the attendants are dicks about it, go find another garage. And don't complain about paying full pop and not actually having a real spot. We had two bikes parked in the front of our spot and they slipped a mini cooper in behind us.

Lincoln tunnel wasn't bad on the bikes, but the line at the tollbooth coming in was brutal.

    Have fun!

I am surprised that they let bikes thru the tunnel.....they would not let you ride a bike thru the Detroit-Windsor tunnel due to exhaust buildup from traffic backups they said.

The tunnel was about the friendliest part of getting in & out of the island. Driving on the island was a workout. Once in, things weren't as bad as expected. The taxi/limo drivers were actually the respectful (despite the taxi that knocked off one of XX's saddlebags in Times Square), assuming you followed their cues. Beware of the delivery vans!

Try to leave town by 1 or 2pm or way way later. If you're going to end up leaving during bad traffic times, be prepared to pop your headlight fuse til you're off the island to prevent your battery for discharging.

Nothing like having to bump-start in Manhattan.
