4th gen ticking noise

Ive got a 97 with a tick, noise increases when i blip the throttle. The bikes got 70,000 km is it possible its just loose valve clearance? i know the previous owner didn't do alot of service on it. ill be pulling the valve covers soon any tips would be great especially concerning changing shims.

So i took it to Honda and they adjusted valves+ gave me free plugs since they went and installed them even after i said i had them on order already and not to touch em so after some calls back and fourth they wrote em off and didn't charge me the labor. However the noise is still there and wouldn't make the noise for them on my way home however it came back now Ive gotta either go back/ go somewhere else or live with it until something Major happens.

 

I would not worry about it. If Honda has looked at the bike, adjusted valves, and not brought anything else to your attention, you are good to go. If something else was wrong with the bike, they would have brought it to your attention, as a sales pitch to make more $$$$$.

I have heard of alot of 4th gens, that make a ticking noise even after valves check out ok.

 

I read in an older magazine article that the cam shafts sometimes can walk back and forth in their bearings. There was a easy fix for the dealer involving drilling holes in the bearing caps. Sorry for the gibberish, I'll try to find the article in question.

 

Maybe its an exhaust leak......

 

I believe that fix was for the mid 90's magnas, the
VF750C as opposed to the VFR.

Just a little update. When i got the bike back from Honda (V.I. Honda located in nanaimo B.C. Canada) i left the fairings off just so i could pull the radiator and flush it out....good thing i did cause after a quick ride the next day i noticed i had an oil leak coming from the front of the forward valve cover. Went back to Honda and they said "oh ya that gasket needed to be replaced" thanks for telling me. so i ordered a gasket and waited two days, then pulled the valve cover. and what do i find but two of the bolt seals were on one bolt that left another bolt with NO SEAL. So i go back to Honda tell them what they did and inform them ill never be back and I'm gunna Tell everyone i know about how incompetent they are. after a few more days of waiting for new bolt seals i put the bike back together and its leak free. But the tick is still there!
