Well, because everyone made fun of the carbon "look" levers, I opted for the regular levers.

    Bike: 1986 VF1000R

So, what I need to know now are the steps to replace the lever. I have a manual, but it talks about replacing the fluid and not removing the lever. I just need to make sure I don't screw it up since right now it works. Anyone know what the steps for removal and re-installation?

You see that slothead bolt that goes through the lever (around which the lever pivots ?)
unscrew the nut off the bottom of that and the unscrew the bolt from the top.
At this point the lever should come off in your hand. Replace with the other lever and reverse the sequence.
Then , I'd suggest you take a basic motorcycle maintenance course.
