Black smoke

    Hello all,

    I am new to VFR site and a bike world all together, so bare with me if the questions sound rediculous.

    I bought the 2003 VFR with only 6,000 miles on it (man it looks awesome) but here is a glitch:

    When you start it up, and quickly rev it up to about 5,000 rpm and let go right away it blows black smoke a bit.

    If you gradually bring it up to hi rpms, no smoke.

    The only things I know about the bike is that it has not been riden for a year and I just took it to a different dealer and he for an oil change (I don't know if it was smoking before that)

    Is this normal?

    you have the owners manual??

    check that the oil is not overfilled.

    In a little window on the bottom, oil appears to be dead in between the lines. I checked it cold thought

    I don't mean to sound like a mother hen here, but starting it up and revving it is a really bad idea. The best thing to do is let it idle on its own for a minute or so, so that oil has a chance to circulate.

    The black smoke is a sign of it running too rich, as in too much fuel, which might be happening because F/I circuitry is responding to a demand for more fuel with cold engine coolant temperatures. I have no idea what type of throttle position sensor these engines use, i.e. whether or not it is an on/off switch or a potentiometer, but I would suspect that the bike is doing what it thinks it needs to do based on sensor inputs and a cold engine.

    I have noticed that my '07, if started cold and shut off within a few seconds and restarted a few seconds later, will run rich and not idle cleanly for a bit. Now that I know that, I start it and let it idle for at least 30 seconds. My point here is that every F/I system has a few peculiar traits, and your black smoke might be one of them.

    Despite what the guys with the gixxers do at the Dairy Queen, it's not good to rev an engine (hot or cold) with no load on it...

    Give it a minute before you goose it.

    blue smoke = oil
    white smoke = coolant

    black smoke + blue smoke + white smoke = green smoke

    That's all the money you burn thru fixing it.

    If you want to see all those colors. Then take that sucker to 11 grand and hold it there for a minute or so. You'll be saying "Ooohh looook at all the pretty colors":smile: Free reving isn't a good idea.

    Do guys with Gixxers do that :rolleyes: I though they did that cause they were trying out the new exhaust that was just installed.


    I agree any internal combustion engine requires that the oil be circulated FIRST before you rev the shit out of it. I know Im guilty of doing the same thing, you know you get all excited that your going on a ride and hit the sdtarted button and when she catches you give her a goose just to say hi. stroke her first then goose her. (totally tongue in cheek no offense to your mechanical apptitude, or knoweledge)
