On my way to work this morning (I have a long commute), traffic was slowed as I came across a motorcycle that had gone down on the freeway (westbound 580 in Oakland for those in the Bay Area). I didn't see the accident, so I have no idea what happened, but I did get there before emergency response, and there was a man administering CPR to the rider. I figure that can never be a good sign after a motorcycle crash (probably at high speed).

Be safe out there friends, that's the most important part.

I hate to hear/see that, hopefully he pulls thru. It probably gave you a tushy pucker factor of 10 as you rode by. Odds are 50/50 he was flying or a cage idiot pulled out in front of him. Yes bad things happen to good people, but like in Vegas, I'm betting the odds.

lamps to all and keep the shiny side up

The kind of incident that causes the heart to stop due to injury is called a "trauma code".
The survivability of trauma codes is very low. The body has a series of compensation mechanisms in place for 'damage control'. These shut down systems one at a time to preserve the most vital of organs. If the systems ALL shut down, that is the end.

    Sad but true.

That sucks. I have noticed since I have started riding how bad other drivers actually are (not that I claim to be great). I guess I just didn't pay that much attention to it while I was in my car. Even today while driving, a woman pulled out in front of me in her SUV. A few things wrong:
    1. No blinker
    2. Clearly blew through a red light
    3. Was speeding
    4. Even when she turned, she swept out into the opposite direction turn lane.

Probably no cares in the world for her, probably didn't even think she did anything wrong. I see this more and more now. So it scares me that as a rider I can do everything right and it can all be taken away by some moron driver.

Hate to hear that. But, I guess it causes the rest of us to be a little more careful. Here, we had 2 killed on bikes this week alone. One was at more than double the speedlimit (idiot), and the other one crossed the center line (they don't know why, wasn't speeding, no alcohol) and head-on with a car. His wife and 2 sons were on bikes of their own right behind and saw the whole thing happen. Ouch!!!!

we had one die on bike nite (wed Nite).
didn't know him but read about it.
driving down the street doin 35 mph car turned right from the left lane across his lane.
    end of story.

And I always ride like the cages are trying to kill me.

they are. they don't care and they don't look.

Last Sat. A soccer mom in a Suburban along side me. I was in left lane next to her
She just comes on over into my lane almost forcing me to cross center line. I blew my horn she heard it, thank god. She swerved back into her lane. She was visibly shaken. at the next light she rolled down her window apologized and said she didn't see me. I told her You didn't look, thats why you didn't see me. Had there been oncoming traffic and I wouldn't have been able to dodge her or it I would have stayed in my lane and let her run me over. So she would get a ticket for improper Lane usage. I would have gotten a free trip to the hospital or the morgue. whatever would be appropriate.

Yeah CPR on the side of the road is usually a bad sign.

You Guys and Gals be careful out there.
watch out for each other cause the cagers don't give a damn.

    Everyone trying to kill you

Here's the problem... if someone is really trying to kill you, you won't be able to avoid it. Anyone seen the vid of the Italian police taking out a terrorist on a motorcycle? I can't remember where I got the link, but the guy had a hostage and demanded a sport bike. They gave him one... and had a cop in a plain car waiting at the end of the road to take him out. Car jumped out in front of the bike just as he was accelerating to about 45-50 mph, and he just went sailing through the air.

Practically the same thing happened to me while riding around town last December, minding my own business. First accident in 8 years of riding/5th motorcycle (3rd gen3 VFR!).

Had few close calls, and i agree ride like they are going to actively try to kill you.
The car next to you...ya she hates you..hates your guts and wants you as a pancake. The eye contact you thought you had was to lure you in a false sense of security...keep an eye on her..she wants you dead because you look like her ex.
that van on the left is waiting just long enough so you can't stop so he can hit you....thinks you slept with his wife..he has a grudge..don't assume anything his blinker means he is turning right...he will still cross 2 lanes to get you.

It's how you have to look at it. then when they do actively try to kill you it seems almost predictable and logical..
okay if so and so was attempting to kill me they would merge...oh hey look at that.

    CARDINAL RULES:
    1) No one rides my bike, ever.
    2) Everybody else wants me dead.

This may sound cold and I don't mean it that way but I'd like to know the details, how it happened, who's at fault...

A potentially frightening thing almost happened to me the other morning on the way to work (03:00). Normally I would have been driving through a particular intersection that is controlled by a traffic light. I usually gas up last thing at the end of my day so I don't have to going to work. The day before the station was incredibly busy so I just went straight home. So this morning I stopped at the gas bar right at this intersection. A smaller car, the size of a Camery, I believe went right through the red light and just smoked an armored car that was traveling in the opposite direction making a left turn on a turn signal. This collision was of such force, the armored car flipped onto its side and slid about 15 meters down the road. The car spun around a few times and came to rest. Had I not stopped for gas, that likely would have been me instead of the armored car.

I don't get it. Traffic lights are far more visible at night than during the day time. The momentum of that car to do that to a heavy armored car must have been incredible. I did not see what led up to the crash, just heard it, and it was horrendous.

No doubt speed was a major factor in the end result, but what caused the collision in the first place. Inattentiveness like gabbing or cell phone use. Alcohol? I suppose there is the chance it was a medical issue but I doubt that.

I don't know how bad the injuries were. I am sure that guard in the back of that armored car was hurt bad. They don't wear seat belts in the back of those things I am told. And there would have been heavy rolls of coin flying all over the back of this thing. Remember, we have $1.00 and $2.00 coins here that are bigger than a silver dollar.

The message here folks is that we ride bikes . It has a degree of risk involved. It is dangerous to not be very aware of what is happening around you. You cannot always expect that driver of the cage to see you. You should have faith in this but we all know that is not the case.

Be sharp. Be safe. Wear ATGATT. Even so, I would not have survived that one.

I am certain that half of the people can't see us. The other half can and they want to hit us.

The worst bike wreck I ever saw was up on Skyline in the Santa Cruz mountains about 25 years ago. A Laverda Jota hit a Kawasaki 500(?) head on. Estimated speed of the Laverda was about 130MPH, Kawasaki was about 50MPH. The Laverda rider crossed over into the Kawi's lane around a semi-blind corner, so the Kawi never even had a chance. Killed both riders.

The worst part of that day was after I got past the wreck. I was on a twisty piece of road called Highway 9 following some slow cars. A guy about 18 years old with his girlfriend on the back of his bike passed all of us, in the wrong lane, around a blind 25MPH corner, no helmets, just jeans and T shirts.

Sorry Michael I know the 580,sh*^ happens. The 680 scares me more.Mom,80Years is in Walnut Creek. Those roads are in such bad shape and the drivers (cagers)run 90mph+like idiots.Bikes don't have a chance if things get weird.Going for a visit tomorrow, think I'll take the Chrysler, need to carry some tools. If it wasn't for mommy the bike would rage with a middle finger in the air @100mph

That is always hard to see.

Where I am in FL there are tons of bikes on the road and it seems like more and more every day with the gas prices. I just started riding again about a month and a half ago and it is unreal just how bad drivers are. I was driving the jeep yesterday and passing the traffic in the oncoming turn lane, they were stopped waiting for their light, I counted 8 people on cell phones out of 13 cars!! No wonder people take out bikes all the time down here, shitty driving is bad enough, but the cell phone thing is out of control.

I really wish they would make it mandatory nation wide to use a hands free device. That seems like such a simple thing that would probably save thousands of lives a year. Accidents are one thing, but straight up negligence is another.
