hello everyone...i just registered today..ive decided that my new bike will be a 98-01 VFR...i chose the 5th gen vfr because it fits within my price range ($3k-$5k), i like sport bikes... but for me they are somewhat impracticle, the VFR has the sport bike looks but they are comfortable and have the power to still be fun, i will be on the highway alot so the VFR will be comfortable on long hauls and occasional road trips, im 6'6" , sitting on sportbikes is somewhat a challenge depending on the maker(ive found that i fit on yamaha R6's the best), the vfr is very comfortable for me to sit on and i feel very relaxed(unlike a sport bike where i feel like im on a pocket bike most of the time)

anyways...im in the process of getting taking my IDOT(illinois department of transportation) course so i can get my "M" liscense and be legal on the roads.

i currently ride a 1976 honda cb400t(inline twin)...its an awesome bike to learn on and i only payed $100 for it...ive been riding it for 4 spring/summer/fall seasons..illegally:bolt: but where i live there is nothing but open roads and ive been pulled over a few times by local police and they just tell me to be carefull and get off the road if cars are coming..it has no title, plates, turn signals..just headlight, brake light, tach, speedo, and kick starter.

im tired of doing the illegal thing so i want to do everything right and get my liscense, a nice helmet, gloves, boots, and a jacket. as well as a 5th gen VFR.

i currently have my 2001 subaru impreza 2.5 RS up for sale...once i sell it i plan to buy a honda automobile and a 98-01 VFR:biggrin:

anyways...nice to meet everyone and im off to read all that i can until the day comes when its time to shop!

    1st, Welcome to the club!

2nd, (apology for the ensuing sermon)
You have targeted a fine machine without a doubt butttt, you need to be careful as the performance envelope of this motorcycle will far exceed what you are currently riding or driving. With the right mindset you will be fine.

My 98VFR was indicating 157mph on the front straight at Road America last week so this machine is no slouch and will test your skills to the limits on the street, where they should not be tested, I might add.

Street skills and defensive driving can be learned but it takes time so don't rush and ride with other experienced riders when possible to watch, listen and learn. Operating a motorcycle is easy, surviving in the urban jungle is a challenge to say the least.

That being said, I'm in Crystal Lake Illinois so perhaps we can meet somewhere if you are looking for a riding partner. I was thinking about selling my 98 and getting a track only bike and then common sense stepped in to make me take it off the market. Her name is Mrs Taylor and she like the back seat on the VFR more than I like a new race bike apparently.

I'm also a NESBA member so if you want to hone your skills on the track, I can help you with some guidance in this direction.:peace:

Good luck finding a fifth gen bike, you will love it when you get it!:bolt:

Hey Grip, Welcome to the forum. I have to agree with jethro ( do I dare call him Gibbs? lol). I am new to the VFR as well after having a Radian 600 for a couple of years and I must say this bike way outperforms the Radian. I was out earlier and just decided to crank the trottle wfo and, being of light mass, I thought I was gonna come off the back of it. At the same time i got those accelleration butterflies. It was sooooo cool. I also have to agree that is is a comfortable bike. I commute, when weather permits, about 90 miles round trip to/from work with no complaints. Good luck in finding one of these wonderful well rounded machines and be sure to take the time to learn the bike, ride your own ride and at your own pace. :)

Performance wise, I was quite pleased with how my VFR fared against the new 600s on the track. I expected them to really wax my ass on the straights but it was actually a pretty fair fight. If I got a good drive out of the corner, I could outrun them or keep the advantage till the next corner. It was obvious that the VFR had better mid range grunt, which I used wherever I could to my advantage. A better rider will always win of course as long as the disparity between machines isn't too great. The VFR suprises many.

Now hurry up and get one so we can share your first experiances!

thanks everyone...i understand the VFR is 4 times more powerfull than the bike ive been riding. i understand that i have to respect the power of the bike at all times. just because its big and powerfull dosent mean i have to go as fast as possible everywhere. i have ridden my buddies 2003 cbr 600RR many times(i have about 15 hours on his bike) im scared to go fast on it, but i have no problems driving it around normally following the rules of the road.

when i get a VFR i will definatley be looking for people to ride with...my other other buddy with a bike is the one with the 600RR.

I have had a 600 supersport bike and I was quicker on it, but that may just be as I age, I'm becoming more mortal. Plus, I dropped it on asphalt once. :) Anyway, the VFR does have decent amount of power, I don't think it will get away from you, but you won't outgrow it quickly. Plus, it just has one of the most bitchin' sounds out there (at least onc you ditch the stock pipe) The other sport bikes I hear arounf town just sound so snively compared to the VFR. They may outrun me, but dammit I look and sound good. My old 600 was lighter and maybe a little quicker, but I couldn't stand to ride it as far as I ride the VFR without a problem. Oh, another thin I love (I dont know about everyone else) is/are all the little extras like the centerstand, the clock, trip meters, FUEL GUAGE!) these are great add-ons. PLUS you get a single sided swing arm! And wait there's more...just kidding.

    VFR is the one...

If you are still looking for a good used VFR let me know. I bought a brand new VFR 800 at the end of 2000 and may have to sell it. I have performed all service at the dealer and even did the non-mandatory complete fluid changes on everything because I never thought I would sell. Anyway, it has 5000 miles on it and is in perfect condition with the only mod being a carbon fiber exhaust slip on by Micron. The other posters are right...the bike is amazing and super fun to ride. Hard to sell but new chapters are ahead for me...maybe.

    Grip,

Look in the photo section and you can see my black helmet. It's a KBC Urban Assault. Pretty good for the price I think. Dark faceshield is a must, though. I got one for 20 or so on ebay. Another pretty cool black helmet is from ICON and is is rubberized. I saw a local guy with a red one, and I thought it looked sweet. I'm not crazy about all the glossy glittery helmets.
