I'm taking delivery of a 07 VFR with 5000 miles on the odo, original tires. How much life do you think the rear tire has left??

I plan on picking up the bike and riding it 2900 miles from NV to NJ so I may need to change the rear before or mid journey.

    Please advise.

    Thanks

Replace it. OEM tires are not the best anyways.

Oh, and welcome, congrats, and in case I don't see ya, good morning, good afternoon, good evening, and GOOD NIGHT!

    OK, any more info?

about how many miles does an average rear ST tire last on a 6th gen VFR?

What should I replace the rear with?

How bout the dual compound Michelin Road 2?

I'm thinking the front will last longer but not sure, do you think it will last till Jerz? That would be a total of 8000 miles on the front tire...

Thanks for the input since you guys have the experience on these bikes.

You have to understand, that we are working blind here. We don't have pics of the condition of the tires. The PO could have torn them to pieces. Nor do we know the age of them, and/or if they have excessive dry rot. The OEM tires you have on could have been made in 2005, 2006, and therefore are already 2-3 years old or more. OEM tires tend to be a tad cheaper lower quality as well many times.

It really really depends on your riding style how long your ST tires will last. If I were to guess, and you were an average non-ricky racer type of guy, and were using ST tires, maybe 8-9k in the front, and 7-8k in the back.

Again, this really depends on your riding style, conditions, roads, etc.

People on here seem to love Continental Road Attacks for long mileage, and good grip above 50 degrees ambient temperature. Me? I run Metzeler Sportec M3's or Michelin 2ct's.

My opinion....change both front and rear tires. Put your mind and body at ease.

    OK,

Thanks for the info Contis are usually cheaper too.

    Thanks.

Ever ridden I-70? I'll be going across NV on 50 and then picking up 70 near SLC and cruizin all the way back.

Do yourself a favor and pick up a throttle lock so that you are not having to twist the throttle the whole way back on the interstates. I just picked up the NEP throttle lock for about $20 and it took about 5 minutes for me to install. It really helps prevent cramping and soreness in your hand/wrist. If you do decide to pick up the NEP brand make sure to get the CC-2 model for single throttle cables. The VFR does have dual throttle cable but the single throttle model fits better without having to make any modification to it. I also recommend a tire patch kit with a portable compressor to carry in your backpack/bags for your long journey. You may even want to bring a canyon strap and some tie-downs with you in case the bike needs to be loaded into a trailer/truck for any reason. If I was going across the country on a new bike I would also look into getting a roadside assistance service in case the bike has some hidden problems along the way. I paid less than $20 for the entire year for roadside through my insurance company. As far as the tires go, it's hard to say without seeing pics of them.

Congrats on your new bike to be !!

You have to have AAA PlusRV Membership to cover motorcycles. When I called to inquire about the costs it seemed like a ripoff to me since I had to pay an extra $64 dollars to cover the bike. This made my total membership cost over $125 for the year. I ended up using Progressive Insurance Roadside assistance which costs less than $20 for the whole year. Just make sure to get the coverage added a few days prior since both AAA and Progressive told me the roadside wouldn't go into effect for 72 hours after adding to my policy.

Oh one more thing....I would definately bring a cable lock for the bike in case you need to park overnight at a sleezy motel. If the door is wide enough and you are on the ground floor you could also try to wheel it into your room.

Good idea to swap tires before the ride, big piece of mind thing. I 70 should be just fine if you don't mind mind numbing superslabs with construction every 100 miles or so. It should get you home.

    Welcome aboard by the way.

As was stated earlier, we are in the blind here when it comes to the tires. You are talking about riding the bike home on a highway trip. Personally I wouldn't change the tires unless they are really worn, or maybe if they are Dunlops. Personally, I don't like Dunlops, never have, won't ride on them, but 07 VFR came with Metzlers, Bridgestones or Dunlops. Any idea what is on it or how worn they are? Now keep in mind, if they are worn quite a bit, or if you were planning on taking curvy roads all the way home then I would change them. But, I have 3500 or so miles on my 07 and they really don't even look worn. I certainly wouldn't want to put new tires on and put 3000 miles on the tires on the trip home. The golden rule here is to do what makes you feel comfortable. If you're the least bit nervous, change them. We can talk all day about tires, wear, roads, etc. You need to feel safe, if new tires accomplish that then its money well spent.

I might just ride it out and plan on stopping at a stealership half way back and evaluating there condition at that time.

I'm definitely getting jerked around by the stealership in NV. The bike was used as a rental but is still owned by the stealership, technically I'll be the first owner even though it has 5k on the odo. They are telling me the RWB was not sold with grab rails, WTF?! Obviously the stealership lost them and doesn't want to replace them.

Can you please confirm for me that indeed the RWB did come with grab rails?

If you're talking about the passenger bars that they hold on with their hands yeah every VFR comes with them. The stealership is jerking your chain. If I were you I'd look elsewhere for tires. If there aren't many options you can always check out online stores like Motorcycle Tires and Accessories and order the tires. Then you can ride the bike and have a buddy carry the tires in his cage to a place that will replace tires for you.

Yeah the stealership is being difficult in the negotiation. Quite honestly they are straight up being deceitful, I'm getting pissed. They are feeding me :bs: And its turnign into one of these:vader:

Um - you sure you want to buy that bike? Its been a rental, and I'm sure the dealer put minimum effort and maintenance into it to keep it up. And I am sure its had the crap beat outta it -its a rental.

If you commited, a fresh oil change, chain inspection - lube and slack would be worthwhile. Also since youll be hitting I-70 west, if you stop in Springfield Ohio, Competition Accessories is right there off the hwy, and you may try going for tires on the way from there. If you get there early enuff, you could get in/out with minimum pain. +1 to the throttle lock, or an alternate is a throttle rocker - about 10 bucks.

Good luck on your trek. You have a crazy drone that is a long haul. I know I would go nuts.

Throttle lock is a definite, I'm using the throttlemeister, more$ but you don't see them, they just look like standard end weights. As far as tires, newones are cheap insurance for a trip like that , especially since the rental use on them was likely not the kindest:hangme:. Just my 2 cents:unsure:

I only got like 2000 miles out of my OEM tires. I love the Pilot Road 2s.

    Change those bricks!
