I have owned an FJ1200 with nearly 100,000 km on it, a VFR in the 60,000 range, a GSX-R with 25,000 km and now an RD400 with about 6,000 original km on it. On all these bikes, I've found the most consistent indicator of the mileage is to pull off the seat and/or tank and the amount of grease, dirt grit and crap underneath (in the areas where a casual wash would not reach, especially around the upper shock mount on the VFR) has given a pretty good indication. You might also check to see if the OEM steel sprockets look new (if they're not original, you will know it's got 10,000 + on it at least), look at the condition of the fork lowers (should be little to no pitting or rock chips, which will be evident as the miles add up), check the brake pads for whether they are original and if so there should only be minimal wear, etc... just basic sleuthing and thinking it through
