just curious, has anyone SUCCESSFULLY turned a vfr into a dual sport? I have found a mutilated '99 and '03 in my area, and was thinking of the dual sport mega trailies....hmmm just curious

Too heavy for me for a dual sport... I know, I know, GS's are heavy as hell, as well, but I would turn it into a "street fighter" before a dual sport.

Hmmmm?? Dual Sport....It has the suspension for it. But, it has waaayyyy too much power and weight. Can you buy off road tires to fit? As long as you avoid the goat paths and stick to forest service roads and such, it would be a ton of fun. Be sure to buy a full suit of body armor. Something like that could give you a good thrashing.

To me the gearing seems kind of high. Though I guess going to a larger rear sprocket could help with that. Ground clearance does not seem to be the greatest for any deeper ruts/bumps. However on a relatively smooth dirt trail it would probably work great. The XR650L would probably work out better?

Oooo you mean it's not a dual sport? no wounder my center stand keeps hitting bottom.

I think it depends how off road you want to go, it is heavy, powerfull and low clerance but a high frame( so if raised it would become very very high). It would be awsome though. Debated getting a dual sport for a while but no one else rides them around here :(

absolutely the wrong platform. I can't think of a worse bike for D/S conversion.

I have no idea what size wheels the vf/vfr platform uses, but healthy tires can be had in 17, 18, 19, 21. I was thinking along the lines of taller forks and a wee bit healthier rear spring setup. power should be manageable w/ gearing changes... weight for me not a problem. geometry feels comfy enough with bike raised up on a block...I am 6'3'' so it will be different than some. yes the xr650l would be fine....except for the miles and the one cylinder thing...I have had to walk some miles before.....I figure with love and attention, it should be in the same relative class as a (yuk) KTM or a GS... without the expense or the snob factor....besides, wouldn't it just be kick butt lookin'?
