Hi everyone, I am new to this forum but not to V4's.
Been tempted with an 84 VF1000F Intereceptor thats in need of a lot of TLC. Needs several body parts, seat, and A LOT OF cleaning and surely rebuild of the all the hydraulics systems. Along with complete flush of fuel system, coolant system, and oil system at a minimum. Lord knows what all little items here and there that will need to be rebuilt/replaced.

What from other year/size Interceptors parts are interchangeable?
How difficult is it to find parts to build one of these bikes?
And finally are the 84's worth rebuilding from a slightly more than parts bike start??

And lastly, would one be better off finding a different one to work with.

    Thanks in advance.

It's a good bike if you can get it going nicely. I swapped in '85 1000R forks, wheels, brakes and swingarm to my '84. There are some shock options still available. Body, exhaust and engine parts are pretty rare these days. Generally, hard parts from the '85-'86 1000R will swap over with little or no modifications. I have a thread at Vf1000r Rebuild - VFRD , you'll have to dig through it for the VF1000F posts but there's some good info in there.

It's basically a bigger VF750F. Same Electrics, coils, ign boxes, master cyclinders -brake,clutch, carbs, and pretty much anything else replaceable on the exteror of the motor. I believe brake calipers and the like also. May want to double check that. You may want to find a better one because new OEM parts are a bit pricey. But if you do buy it, then for OEM stuff go to cheapcycleparts.com for the best pricing I've found.

Pull the valve covers and have a look at the cams. I`ve had 3, 2 of which had eaten the tips of the cam lobes square and dug furrows in the rockers. Parts aren`t plentiful, but not unobtainable either. Depends on if it`s worth it to you. If the cams/motor are good, go for it.

Other than cam wear issues, are there any other model specific issues seen in the 84 VF1000F bikes??

Thanks for the information, greatly appreciated. Still have not pulled the trigger yet.

There are some typical first generation VF problems like 1) the suspensions are junk 2) the regulator/rectifiers are weak, along with the three yellow wire plug and 3) the spark boxes sometimes go bad. Remember, it's a 25 year old bike and will have issues as such. We still love them!

Well I decided to go ahead and pick up the 84 VF1000F to make it a dragstrip bike.

I had my '85 motor rebuilt...it took a while but most of the parts did come in. There are a couple of salvagers in my area so, I had to get some used parts. Full price is hard to pay....you'd think that it would be cheaper after 20 years....I did find a site, cmsnl.com that has lots of new parts. I ordered a spring plate that I couldn't find here.
