So you guys are looking forward to the change? I haven't found too many people looking for more displacement, or changes to the engine. What are you looking for? More power?

Less vibes would be nice. Although it's something which can be remedied with BMW grips. But I've gotten used to the agricultural feel cos it adds character to the bike.

V5, eh? I wonder if there's a cutout pic of the engine anywhere on the web?

It's be nice to see an engine that is super smooth on/off throttle. As far as power goes, it'd be nice to have more in the rev range in top gear at highway speeds to make 2 up passing easier. That being said, the current bike is fast enough for the streets if you ring it's neck.

    My wishes:

    Better suspension
    Lighter
    Smoother on/off throttle
    No VTEC
    Better rear seat

the funny thing that led me to this posting... I saw an '84 VFR 1000 on EBAY and was thinking about buying it for kicks. hmmm I may be saving my money and doing some R&D myself to see what I can do about making an existing bike better... 1000 cc's seems a bit much for an all round bike... way too much power for the masses! I think in the U.S. we should have a standard much as in the U.K. You have to be able to ride a 50cc and move your way up by time in the saddle... It's been a theory of mine for quite some time... even though I am younger than a lot of VFR guys I think this is as true a statement as I can get out there right now. There should be a limit on what noobs can ride and this(VFR 1000)... is just another reason for that comment. Proven time in the saddle is/and should be the prerequisite for even THINKING about this bike becoming obtainable... (I still am intrigued by the thought of it making a comeback though)

That's the 180 crank. A 360 V4 ala RC30, RC45, NC30, NC35, VF500F, ect, are naturally smooth. I think the 180 crank is for better grunt and bad weather traction, but really, I don't anyone has ever figured out why they put the 180 crank in the street VFRs.

The article says "Not only will it need to replace two models (the flawed VFR800 Interceptor". What flaws is he talking about? I am new to the VFR, had her for less than a month. Could the experienced riders share some light on what the article is talking about?

It's been determined the rear wheel nuts are too heavy to consider the VFR 'perfect'. If only Honda had engineered them better it might have earned Hell For Leather's coveted perfect bike, 'Buttless Chaps' award.

honda has some big shoes to fill! if there going to make a new 1000cc bike, they need to go back to the past and just improve, not remodel the vf1000f's and 1000r's chop some fat off of it throw some fuel injection on it and give it a modern look just revamp on what they already have granted the old VF bike's had lot;s of room for improvement, but this bullcrap V-5 crap just making something more complicated, just go back to its Beginning, i my self would like to see a VFR 1000 but based on more of a sport breed, im sorry im ranting now, for that matter bring back the 500's think about that bike with better suspension and FI. so so sad to see what's going on :frown:

I'm not quite sure what they mean either, but if you're new than you know they took a way the gear driven cams in the name of weight and added VTEC. Which in and of it's self isn't bad but the gear drive is what a lot of people attribute the older VFR's longevity to. Also instead of saying oh we have to add VTEC for emissions they told us it would be more powerful. It was not the case. We got a bike that cost more to maintain, was heavier, and had the same amount of power. However, they did improve the look, handling, and riding position. Not by leaps and bounds, mind you, but they did refine it. Also, the extra headlights have been a sore point with the new VFR apparently. I mean it wouldn't be a VFR if it didn't eat R/Rs, but there have been at least 2 recalls that I have noticed for electrical problems. Then there is the fact that the VFR DOMINATED it's segment for 11 years straight. The new VTEC VFR hasn't won any awards that I am aware of, yet they have kept the same design for 7 years? This is mostly due to the competition catching up (Ducati, Aprillia, ect). Also, back in the early '90's the VFR wasn't only an awesome ST bike, but it could keep the GSX-R750 and 750 Ninja of the days in sight. Those bikes got more and more power and less wieght, and the VFR really didn't change much in those respects. Although the '98 VFR did beat the R1 for Bike Of The Year in Motorcyclist magizine. But many people on the old VF/VFR list used to scream for a 1000cc VFR. I've read another thread I found on VFR discussion that a V4 1000-1200cc VFR was much more likely. The V5 1000c rumor has been around forever, and is unlikely where the V4 990 MotoGP bike is gone. However I disagree that it would add complication. The way Honda made the V5 was so simple it made me wonder why no one had thought of it before. It truely was a very simple and brilliant way of doing it, that really would not add complication, but would add time to maintenance.

    Just my 2 cents,
    Rich

To be fair, to update the old VFs it would take a complete redesign. The old VF1000s weighed 650lbs! But I've been calling for Honda's return to V4s in racing for some time.

We need a VFR1000RR, VFR600RR, and VFR1200F. To heck with all this inline crap. :D

Wow, another rumored VFR replacement thread..:deadhorse::deadhorse::deadhorse::deadhorse:

Regardless it won't be an '09- those are already out- it wouldn't be till fall as an '10 if it will happen at all. Pardon me if AI don't hold my breath in anticipation.
