    Hi all,
I'm trying to figure out, before I purchase anything, if all 5th gen 98-01 vfr exhaust headers are a straight fit, also I know the main bolt on support for the 2001 is on top of the catalitic, but is it in the same location for the other models which don't have a cat.
    Thanks

Not to sure what you are asking but I think you want --- Yes the '98 and '99 headers will fit a 2000 and 2001. Also for that matter they will fit 6th gens too.

I'm just replacing the headers, I damaged the bottom rear down pipe, when I attempted to remove my center stand, doh! actually it was when I decided I really needed the center stand and couldn't put it back on with the pipe in the way anyway, long story short, I screwed up and have a quick fix in place so I can ride, but I want to change out the headers. also the 2001 model which is what I have, bolts to the underside of the engine, at the cat, do the earlier models ie.98,99,00 bolt in the same place?
    Thanks

yes, on the 2001 model, a main bolt attaches the top of the catalitic to the bottom of the engine. swry I don't have a pic. but I'll work on it.

On the '98 the rear pipes are 2 separate pieces that collect into a main header. The header has 2 pipes that are from the front, a collector and then 2 connector pipes that go together with the 2 rear separate pipes. At the end of the whole assembly where the slip on muffler goes is a seal it joint. Thats it no bolt to the bottom of the engine.

If you are making the swap, you are gonna ditch the cat anyhoo? swry I'm dense, I'm not getting the jest of your question. Anybody with an '01 help out?

your correct mello dude, I think I still will have to drill out the pipes and tig some threaded ports for the 2 02 sensors but I do understand now that the pipes 2000 and newer pipes are held in place only by the exhaust port nuts on the engine. Is the elimination of the cat worth doing?

Thanks melo dude, I do understand better now that the 2000 and older model are only held in place by the 4 exhaust ports on the engine. the 2001 had a bolt throught the cat for added support. Does the elimination of the cat really improve hp, like I've read in some threads? Thanks

I never had to deal with the cat so - I cant say for sure. But in theory if you ditch the cat, you get better flow of gases. And with better flow of gases, you get improved power.

I dont have the O2 sensors either, but I have read they need to be dealt with too.

-- My guess with the extra bolt to engine is that the cat is heavy and needs extra support.
