Hey there. I am taking my 2004 VFR into a tuning shop (EDR Performance in Portland, OR) for a custom map. I am running Leo Vince exhaust with O2 eliminators and a K&N filter. Right now I have the Staintune map loaded and things are pretty good, but maybe there is a bit more HP lurking around in the LVs. Is there anything I need to advise the tuners to get the optimum map, or do I just let them block the pair valve and tune away?

Finished. New map and air filter. Now have 101 HP at the wheel. Smooth power delivery all the way through the VTEC transition point. Worth the money.

Did you happen to have your Viffer dyno'd before installing the PCIII or while running the Staintune map? I picked up a three month old PCIII off ebay yesterday with O2 sensor elims for $305; waiting for it to get here. I'm running Staintunes and a K&N.

From what I've read, If you use the European maps the RPMs change every 250 vice every 500 RPMs like on the US maps. Can't wait for it to get here! Got a valve job scheduled for next Sat. Will have it dyno'd, install the PCIII, and dyno again after that.

How did you like EDR? How much did they want to do the tune?

I liked EDR. The shop certainly is busy! Lots of sportbikes - Japanese, Ducati, you name it. Very efficient shop, too. My appt was on Tuesday and the bike was scheduled to be ready on Thursday. EDR called a day early and told me it was ready to go. Cost me $275 for the tune. The dyno run with the Staintune map showed 98.55 hp, so I gained a bit with the custom map. However, EDR REALLY flattened out the air/fuel mixture from 3500 RPM to redline. It is perfect! The Staintune map with my LVs was really lean at about 6400 to 6800 RPM and then ran rich from about 8000 RPM on. That resulted in a drop in horsepower right before the VTEC transition, which accentuated the power boost when the 4 valves kicked in. Not so good. Now the power curve is smooth - although it gets steeper at 6800 RPM, like it should. The guys at EDR said mine was the fourth 6th Gen they had done recently, and they all came out at about 100-101 hp.

I am really happy with the smoothness of the bike at VTEC transition - and I guess it doesn't hurt to gain a couple horsepower, either. So EDR gets a thumbs-up!

By the way, I am running a BMC filter.

Nope, I didn't have a stock dyno run.

I am visiting down here in Portland so I don't have a scanner to show you the dyno chart. The custom map boosted the power 2 hp from 6800 on, but I wouldn't have paid $275 for that. The real value the smoothness from 6400-8000 RPM. It's unreal!

thank you for the information on edr. do you think it would be worthwhile having my bike tuned on stock exhaust?

I imagine that you may gain a bit of power but if you plan on installing anything else (PCIII, exhaust, air filter) I would pocket the cash and wait until then. Once the after market parts are on, you'll definitely want it tuned to optimize those parts. The VTEC VFR's are quite tempermental when it comes to the air/fuel mixture. If you read other forums, runners of stock equip. talk a lot about the different gears and RPM ranges in which they have lag. I have it on mine with the after market exhaust and air filter. Just waiting to see what potential will be unleashed after installing the PCIII with the O2 sensor elims and getting it mapped. I'll likely run it on a European Staintune map first to see what its like and have it dynoed like that.

Thanks for the info Alaskan. I live in Denver but there is a local shop here that is supposed to do a pretty great job with bikes. I also think the guy that owned the bike before me knows the people that work there and always took the bike to them.
