Unless you separate the carbs, dunk them in carb cleaner and blow out the passages with compressed air, It's most likely you're not going to get them clean - especially after sitting for 3 years. The smallest fuel passages get clogged first and they are the hardest to clean without dunking them.

After years of owning and working on my V4's, I've learned not to half-ass the job. Do it right the first time - or you will be doing it again. Please learn from my mistakes...uhh, I mean "experience".

If you're going through all the work of removing them, do it right since you have them out...

Speaking of carbs, what would cause a bike, a 89 Honda Hawk GT:

    to barely start
once it starts it runs straight to 3500rpm & stays there
    will not return to idle
when shut down, a loud backfire accompanied by a belch of black smoke

I recently re-jetted & the carbs were clean enough to eat out of so I know it's not dirt. I'm thinking slides or diaphrams. It ran like a beast for a month before this happened.

    Thanks

    KC-10 FE out...

one or all of the chokes closed(choke cable came loose), slide stuck in the up position, a metering needle problem. (bent, not letting slide down all the way) Your throttle lock is on;)
    Just guessing.

Ok CA110, if that were a pix of me, just what business do you think I would be in ... :^). Actually, not even the best docs in Amsterdam could do that to me ;^). Beauty is art; motorcycles, women ...

Although I agree that it can be necessary to tear the carb set completely apart, I'm not doing this for mine as they've been lovingly cared for :^) ... and from the present condition I just don't see the need yet. OTOH, a set of the same carbs I got off Ebay, upon opening up, are so varnished & full of crud, that tearing completely apart looks to be necessary.

carl, i'm sure you know I was just joking around. well anyways, I should have pointed out that taking the carbs out and not fully taking them apart is something I would only do to a set that didn't have any problems to start with and you were in there for something like rejetting after installing a vance and hines exh system like I was or to just clean and freshen them up a little like installing new needles and seats, or looking for any signs of damage and wear. buying carbs off ebay sure can be a crapshoot, I bought a set for parts for my 500 and the person said in "vgc" they must have been setting in the rain or something as they had mud in them and one was siezed up. good thing I only wanted parts. wish you luck on your endeavers, by the way, I'm going down to lancaster, about 5 hrs from here, tomorrow to pick up an 83 750 interceptor with 14 k on it.

Same here. Hey Franko, have you ever gone to Heyser Cycle in Laurel? That's where the former owner of mine got his parts.

I have. They are SO close to my house I could walk there.
But, their hourly rate is higher.
    Their service staff sucks... :puke:
I went there for an estimate for the carb cleaning and they just gave me
a high estimate and a warning that it could go higher.
My dad took his cruiser there and was not too happy with them either.

Now for parts, they are, as most other bike shops, overpriced.
I have seen mark ups as high as 30% on a set of gloves.
Some stuff, they have the same prices as the internet shops.
And once or twice a year, they do an open house with everything 20% off.
That's where I got my Sidi boots.

    Hope that helps.
