I just had the fuel regulator replaced on my bike. 2002 VFR800. The bike now starts with no problem, but now it stalls on the downshift coming to a redlight, or whenever I have the clutch in for too long. I don't think its the idle, because I have it where the manual states; 1200 rpm. I don't think its the battery sliding around because I have it in place with a ziptie. Any thoughts? Is it running too lean, do you think I need to do the pair valve mod?

I'm having the same issue. 2002 with 20,000 KM's on it. When I hop on the brakes and get some heavy revving downshifts it stalls as soon as it gets into 1st gear at about 15 KM/H.

The idle is fine and it runs smooth everywhere else. Not sure what is causing the 1st gear stall........?

My 2002 began doing exactly the same thing this spring.
Downshift into 1st and the rpm's drop like I hit the kill switch.
Starts back up fine and runs perfectly otherwise.
The bike has done this maybe 8 or 9 times,it doesn't always happen,it hasn't happened for about a month now.......wierd.
I thought maybe it was the old fuel/stabilizer I had in the tank all winter.

    Anybody else seen this?????

This can happen if you don't allow the ECU to go through its initial "dance" before you start the bike, i.e. allow the FI light to go out.

It's happened to me while decelerating in 1st (forcing revs below 1000) and also trying to pull out of a rolling stop in 2nd (below 1000 again). The rolling stop was BAD because the bike sputtered and almost stalled, then caught and lurched forwards.

My 02 does exactly the same thing... though it seems to only happen in town under light engine breaking, such as a down shift from 2nd to first, with light throttle. The first time it happened to me I was pulling into a parking lot which had an abrupt curb - figured my center-stand bounced triggering the kill switch... The next time it happened while slowing for a turn at an intersection.... just died no bumps no hard breaking, just a dead motor... started back up instantly with a quick stab at the starter.

In both cases it was a bit embarrassing but not much of a safety concern, however if this were to happen on a high speed turn the results could be disastrous. Any other thoughts as to the cause?

Could this be the tip-over sensor starting to malfunction....

my '06 has done the same thing about 5 times. only during downshifts when blipping the throttle and on the brakes. it hasn't done it in over a month though. mentioned it to the service manager at my dealer and he thought it might go away with a little bit of time. we'll see...definitely a little disappointing. i always let the FI complete the priming sequence before I start the bike, so I can't imagine that this is the cause of the problem. for such a great bike, the fuel mapping pretty much sux! what a pity!

I am starting to have this problem also. 2002 with 12k miles on the clock

so I guess the only fix to this problem is a new ecu? or upgrade to power commander? any new ideas would be greatly appreciated

As mentioned by IB above, try turning on your ignition key for 30 seconds before you start it. Some have mentioned that the failing to allow the ECU to fully initiate the FI might be contributing. Worth a shot to try for a few days to compare to see if it helps. Other have had some success with synching the starter valves.

Also, what is your idle set at?

I've had this happen to me on occasion when shifting into first. There are few things that aggravate me about my VFR (2002) but the fact that I have to shift into neutral to start the bike vice leaving it in gear with the clutch in is a the No. 1 worst.

More than shifting into first, I have my stall fairly often when cruising in 5th/6th at 70-90mph and I pull the clutch in to shake the numbness out of my messed up right hand. Obviously at that speed I just left the clutch out and the bike goes again. Another, yet more subtle annoyance. I'm getting the valves done next weekend and dynoing, installing a PCIII then dynoing again. Wondering if the PCIII will eliminate more than the lag problems; "smarten" up the ECU maybe (hopefully!).

Thinking about my last post, has anyone fiddled or researched the fuse/interlock/circuit that causes the bike not to start if not in neutral. I would totally love to be able to jumper some wires and eliminate that one for good.

Let me know how the power commander sorts out the lag issue...I'm in the market for one soon as well.
