Any known issues with 1986 VF1000R?

I just signed on yesterday and this is my first post.

I am purchasing a 1986 VF1000R that looks amazingly good on the pics that I saw on eBay. I am guessing there are no problems with it, but I do not know if there are known issues for this model. I don't mean things like "it can't turn slow because it's too heavy". I mean things lke leaking seals, clutch issues, etc.

 

i have road an 85 vf1000r since 1990.approx. 40k ml. with no real problems. I would recomend a 180 deg thermostat and wire the fans to come on with the key this bike will cook your ass otherwise.

 

i'd be cautious about the condition of the transmission since all that power can chew up gears....

it IS a REALLY HEAVY bike and a bitch to work on.

 

I owned 2 '86's & now a a Frankin VF1000 .

Only prob I know is already said with the Thermostat should have a 180 degree one installed "if not" allready. :wink:


Also after your get it, I have found that one smiles a lot more when riding one :tongue:

There aren't ANY problems...

...besides the top end oiling problems, fuel pumps and relays that fail, stator wires that melt the connector, gearbox failures (mentioned), junk stock suspensions...

These bikes are still great and don't have any more common issues than any other bike from that era (less in my opinion). It is what it is, and there are things you can do to improve on what's there. Read the forums and ask a lot of questions and you should be able to find all of the help you need!
