Asking price is $3000 obo so few hundred less is likely. Bike has 20k miles and a salvage title from being dropped with 5k miles on it. Since the drop it was repaired by a dealership and everything was replaced that had damage so no dents or scratches on tank or fairings, new clutch, the works to restore it to new condition. Garage kept, well maintained, and good tires.

It would be my first bike so I don't want something new or super old that I would need to turn alot of wrenches on (had looked at the 84-86 500 interceptors and they are only about a 500-1000 less around here with the same or more miles).

Appreciate any and all opinions as prices for this year in my area are 4200+ for clean title.

now im no expert however with a clean title, kelly blue book Suggested Retail Value $3895 and i have a salvage titled bike my self so i would take off $1000 for salvage ? maybe just ask your $3000 and see where it gose ? gas ant cheap so the demand for bikes will go up i think ? good luck and keep us posted ? why are you selling her ?

Sorry. I was thinking about buying it and wondered if the price was ok. $3000 is the asking price but I've never had a problem getting a few hundred off by flashing a wad of cash and to me it seems like a good deal and it would be my first bike so I'm going on alot of riders and forums opinions that this is a top notch bike to not only learn on but also do some cruising and touring.

Sometimes you can not get full insurance on salvage vehicles if that matters to you. Id offer $2700.00 cash and see what happens. That would be a great deal!

Dang it, beat me to it, what SLOVFR said. That would be a great price to get one for if it's as straight as you say, 20k miles ain't nothing to really worry about. Good find, let us know who it goes.

I wouldn't be looking for full coverage just the basic. Could there be problems or higher fees for basic insurance, or is that normally just for full coverage?

my opinion on VFRs as first bikes is : not advisable.

She's too heavy, too tall, too difficult to turn in LOW speed situations.

Besides, all that expensive plastic rules the bike OUT as a learner bike!!!!!! (IMO)

appreciate the advice as I had wondered about the almost 500 lbs as a factor. I'd feel most comfortable in the 400lb range, which the vf500 is at 406 dry, and have alot of miles logged on 300lb bikes and feel they are too easy to flip around in the wind at highway speed. I am 6ft 225lbs so that helps but its hard to know what is a good fit when no one will let you test ride bikes unless they are private sellers. I have also looked at a few 84 85 86 vf500 interceptors but there is so little information on them I wasn't sure. They range around 1000-1500 around here with 15-30k miles with some scratches and or dents. Is the 20+ year old technology still reliable and easy to learn on? I am a shade tree mechanic on cars so i don't mind some wrench turning but with them not only being old but also only produced for 3 years parts may b e hard to come by. Sorry for this getting off track but as you can tell I'm new to all this and have only ridden dirtbikes and enduros with limited street/highway riding.

Went and test rode the bike today and put a deposit on it and will pick it up next week. All my concerns about power and weight lasted all of about 10 seconds after taking off. Damn these things are smooth. Shifting was as easy as thinking about it and by third gear I was up to freeway speeds in less than 5 seconds. No strange noises, shake, or shimmy and tested brakes individually and together and gave great feedback.

Only things it needs is a new chain I'm guessing since the current owner never changed it and it has a broken tab on the plastic piece around the brake light due to vibration maybe? I figured the plastic piece should cost a hundred or two to replace unless I go the cheap fix route but I got an additional $100 off for it and the bike has a two brothers exhaust that i wasn't aware of so I feel it evened out. Will post some pictures when I get her home and thanks again for all the help and advice in my first bike purchase.

FWIW, that's what I paid for my '97 last year... clean, always garaged, and with 7200 original miles on it.

You definitely snagged a great deal. Unfortunately the cost to buy one that far away would put it in the same price as local ones around here plus I wouldn't be able to inspect it without taking a big hit in the wallet if there was a problem. I ended up paying $2400 for a 97 rebuild with new tires and a 2 brothers stainless exhaust with 17.5k miles.

I feel great about the decision as this year is impossible to find under $3500 with a clean title and $4000 if it has low miles within a 6 hour drive of here. This bike was the best deal I saw after 2 months of searching anywhere and everywhere within 300 miles. After putting on just under 800 miles in the last 6 weeks, I'd have been happy paying the asking price :)
