This is my first post and have some questions regarding the fz1 and vfr, Im coming from a cbr 600rr and Im wanting something more comfy, the two bikes i cant decide on is a 05 vfr or a 07fz1, both of these bikes are close in price, the interceptor has hard luggage, new tires, 8500 miles and the fz has a pipe, pc3, aftermarket seat and windscreen with 5k miles,,, so my questions are which bike should i go with, im 6'3 230 and i need a bike so I can ride instead of look at... so how comfy is the interceptor compared to the yamaha, and whats the pros and cons of each

The older FZ1 had a lot of room and at your 6'3" a good condition 2nd hand may be your better choice, to me 5'9" the new FZ1 felt too tight for reach and more upright in riding position which I found the VFR's lean forward and fairing coverage better suited me for distance comfort and wind protection.

Have you looked at maybe a ST1300 or a BMW for even more room than the VFR ?

Lots of guys our size (I'm 6'4" / 240) have VFR's. I have Heli bars and fit on the bike fine, some of the bigger guys lower the pegs to make a little more room. The hard luggage is expensive so thats a plus. The FZ has more HP and to me felt like a little more of an aggressive riding position. Did the 07 FZ's have the FI problems? One of the guys at work had a newer FZ and sold it because it felt terrible coming out of curves getting on the gas. I know the 08's are much better.

Yes the FI factory map is horible. Choppy fueling. Get an '08 and avoid '07.

I'm pretty sure an updated map is available for the '07's to resolve their fueling issues. IIRC Yamaha was updating the map for free.

I'm considering an FZ6 as my next bike and I know my local dealer has 7 '07 models they're motivated to get rid of. Anyone have any Yamaha bulletins on the issue or what VIN # range the problem affects?

The previous owner of my bike is 6'4" and the bike is stock. He chose the VFR.

I went through the same decision process a few weeks ago. I'm only 6', but I did notice that my legs were more comfortable on the VFR because the pegs are more underneath my body, where the FZ1 pegs were a little further back. However, the reach to the bars on the FZ1 seemed a tad bit shorter, so my body was actually a bit more upright. So, from my perspective:
    1. The FZ1 will sit you more upright, but your legs will be further back.
    2. The VFR will have you lean a bit more forward, but your legs will be more underneath you. Since you've got a longer reach than me, you'll likely be more upright than me as well.
So far, I've ridden the VFR for 2 hours straight with no uncomfortableness complaints other than my clutch hand gets a bit sore if I'm clutching a lot, but this is more to do with the VFR clutch (hydraulic?) than anything.
I've noticed that the wind protection on the VFR is really good - your body is protected (remember, I'm 6 ft only), but I can't comment on the FZ's wind protection.
I went with the VFR because there seemed to be a lot more for the money - two rads, VTEC, a nice guage layout, better headlights, single-sided swingarm, and really cool wheels.

the thing that got me the most on the cbr were my knees, they would cramp up before anything else, does anyone have this problem with the interceptor?

On my two hour ride, I did not even think about my knees - no problem whatsoever.
As for the fuel injection mapping on the FZ1, I don't think it's that important unless you're an absolute speed freak - the thing really hauls ass even as a stock motor. But my choice was the VFR.

Im 6'4 and fit on my 4th gen really well. Only thing I would like to change, is the foot pegs. An inch lower would make a huge difference to me.

I cant comment on the FZ1 so I'll just comment on the VFR

I'm only 5'11", albeit with long legs, and I find the pegs too high on my '02 VFR.

I doubt the FZ1's fuel map could be any worse than the VFR's vtec awefullness

IMHO these are the only 2 faults that the VFR has. Lowering pegs are on order after my last 5 day trip....

I'm opposite dimensions from Wesley. While I'm 6'2" and 240lbs, my legs are a bit on the short side. My inseam is only 32.

I found the ergonomics on the VFR to suit me perfectly. I don't have risers, haven't changed the pegs, no throttle lock, no wrist rest, YET I still have no problem riding for hours at a time without feeling fatigued or stressed. (I have lots of other aches and pains that come with age, but none of them from riding).

I don't know about the Yammie, so I can't comment on that bike.
