Newbie to the forums at VFR World, my name is Dan and I am in Arizona.

I am purchasing a used 2004 VFR 800 with 22,000 miles. Years ago I owned a 1998 VFR 800 and loved the bike, did not have enough time to ride it and sold it a couple of years later. My son works at the local Yamaha Dealership and they took this bike in on trade from a 70 year old guy who bought an FJR 1300 - I am assuming this bike has been well maintained and was not driven like it was stolen. I am buying it for $ 5,000.00 and feel that's a pretty good deal.

I have a couple of questions:

What is the basic maintenance intervals on the bike?
How often do you guys change your oil?
How often does the bike need valve adjustments?
Anything else I should get done to ensure this bike has a lot of life left in it?
How many miles do these motors last with proper maintenance?

Thanks in advance for your replies.

    Welcome Dan!
    1. Basic maintenance is about the same as any other bike with chain drive.
    2. I run synth oil and change it about every 3K miles.
    3. You are supposed to have the valves checked every 16K. IMO thats a little excessive. I plan to have mine done around 20K.
    4. Did the PO have the valve check done?
    5. Forever J/K, I heard of the motors going over 80k so probably as long as you want.

Thanks for the quick reply Action!!

I believe they changed the oil and checked the valves, I am having my son double check with the mechanic who went over the bike to be sure. The front tire is going to be replaced and the rear is pretty new. I am going to ask for the previous owners contact information so I can ask him about the previous maintenance it had done. Looking forward to getting back in the saddle, now I just need to figure out which box in the garage has my riding gear

Another question is the graphics on this bike, was this from the factory on 2004 Models? Also can you identify if those are Heli Bars on the bike?

Here is a pic of the new bike, will be picking it up Wednesday as I am having them install a new front tire - can't wait to ride it :ncb:

The bike did not come with the rear seat passenger grab bars, any of you folks want to get rid of a set?

Howl - Tapeworks makes a "big wing" sticker, however, last time I looked they were having copywrite trouble and were not selling them.

Nice bike! If you don't have the owners manual or just want it in PDF so it's searchable, you can get it free at http://www.ahm-ownerlink.com

I'd also be changing out the brake fluid, clutch fluid, and coolant unless it was done in the last couple years.

For the passenger grips, you can probably find someone who installed the rear trunk and doesn't need their original passenger grips anymore?

I just downloaded a copy of the manual, Thanks!!! I did some research on the bike, the guy who traded the bike in only owned it for about 6 Months - mainly sat in his garage over the Winter - prior to that it was owned for most of it's miles by a Honda Mechanic in the area, the bike is immaculate and has been serviced very well. This bike runs like a champ with 22K on the odometer.

If anyone has a set of the passenger grips, send me a PM with how much you want for them including shipping to Zip Code 86312.
