87 700f2 front calipers

the front calipers on my 87 700f2 are seizing up, not tight, but enough that it ate through a brand new set of pads in 400 miles :ncb: yeah you guys know how expensive the pads are for our bikes. After taking it up the :bootyshake2: and buying another set i need to fix this before i can ride, and since its half way through June and i haven't rode once this season i need to do it quick. i don't want to buy used calipers unless the person knows they work 100% and new ones are 300 a piece. What do you guys think about caliper rebuild kits, and how hard is it to do, and do you think my local dealer would rebuild them for me if i bought the rebuild kit?

 

Good pads can usually be found on ebay for good prices. What is going on with the caliper, are the pistons getting stuck? Does it feel like the rotors are warped?

 

I had to do my 88 yami. Simple if you know what you're doing and have the right tools. PITA if not. My calipers were so frozen, I just found some at a slavage place and replaced them.

 

the pistons aren't retracting all the way they'll pull back enough that i can push the bike with little effort but if i jack the bike up the wheel wont spin freely and it eats the pads. more so on the left side if sitting on the bike, i just dont have the patience to rebuild the dang things nor the tools, and new ones, if i can find somewhere that has them in stock are so exspensive.

 

thats exactly what Mine did... you're pistons aren't retracting. Get a rebuilt kit. It sounds like the rubber ring isn't letting them come back in.

My bike was from FL and was corroded on some parts. If you take the calipers off, take the pads off, and pump the brake until both pistons pop out. Try and see if the pistons are corroded/dirty. We took some VERY VERY fine grit polishing paper (like 1000grit) and polished them a little. Did that for all 6 pistons (2 rear, 4 front). They all retract now, and work just fine. Flush your fluid while you're at it too, I think its DOT 4 brake fluid.

everything spins freely, no leaks and I couldn't be happier.

You don't need new brakes, you just need to do the above... and if that doesn't solve it, get a rebuild kit... ebay for under 30 bucks I think.

Parts Dust seal and piston seal under $9.00 from bikebandit.com
you'll need a total of 4 so $36.00 should cover it. take calipers completely apart check parts for pitting. you can brush them with a brass bristle wire brush. you don't want to score them. be sure you check the insides of the calipers. a Brake cylinder hone may be useful. if things are badly pitted you will have to replace some parts pistons run about 50 Bucks each caliper housings are real expensive. if this doesn't do the trick let me know I have a set of working brakes for this bike. I would try this first though. good luck and feel free to ask for help, it's what we do here.

any auto parts store should have them for wheel brake cylinders
they fit in a drill use brake fluid as a lubricant
