I have a 1999 VFR and from dead start I get a "slipping", "surging" feel until I reach 3000 rpm and it smooths out. Anyone know the cause? How can you tell if the cush drive is bad?

Believe thats the "flat" spot in the ecm fuel mapping. Mine does it. Not much when I have my powercommander hooked up.

I have an '07 and I feel that a little bit too. First gear seems relatively high to me in this bike, and letting the clutch all the way out too early well she definitely doesn't like that.

That sounds fair. I could not duplicate the problem while riding. Only below 3000 rpm from stop. Thanks for your input!

under 3000 rpm??? funny, never been down there since I started riding it. I rev to 3K and hold it there as I let out the clutch, unless I'm moving it around in a lot or something else where I'm keeping my feet down. But then, I'm probably being rough on it, too.
