VF1000F when hot problem

Hello,

Just purchased an 84 VF1000F project bike. Most of the problems are just cosmetic issues except the following:

The bike starts when it is cold and seems to run fine. Once it warms up it will not start if I shut it off or stall it out. After it cools again it will start...

Again, even after it is warm is seems to run fine... (yea, ALOT faster then my BMW... WOW!) As long as you don't shut it off or stall... it has to cool before starting again. FYI, The bike has a little over 50,000 miles on it.

Maybe someone out then can suggest where to start looking for this problem... :unsure:

Sounds like you need to rebuild the starter. You should find the kit at your Honda Dealer.

The starter will crank the bike when it is warm... the bike won't start warm but will stay running if it is warm...

Yeah. When the starter gets weak, it pulls too much current from the battery, leaving little for the ignition to work with. It will crank over, but won't start. 1st Gen Honda V-4s are famous for this.

 

hi, sorry but.....
i do not agree. A starter runs or does not runs at all. I think that you have a problem to the gasoline line (fuel pump and/or carbs). Or it is a problem of overheating (cilinder/rings/gasket). Does the engine tend to boil coolant ? If so, check fan (thermoswitch) : which temp. ?....You can easily install a manual switch to run radiator fan before coolant to become too hot...

I was thinking valve adjustment on this one. I know on my 3rd gen, if I ran it hard, then stopped for a couple of minutes, when I tried to start the engine I would have to give it a little fuel, as well as for a few minutes after if I cranked on it, it would cut out like it was starved for fuel, but only at about 6000 RPM. After I had the valves checked (way out of adjustment but bike ran great otherwise) and had them adjusted, the problem went away. I might be off base here, but its just my $.02. :smile:

Just discovered a new problem and that is once again when it is all warmed up the clutch slips... I going to did into the service manual for some of this stuff...

As noted it's not the starter but rather it's in the carbs. I usually notice this when the carbs need to be rebuilt. I'd give that a shot first, they probably need it anyway.
