Just moved to California's central coast (Atascadero) and I got a VFR last month. I've been riding around here a bit. There are a lot of great places. I was hoping someone else from around here visits the site and wants to set up occasional group rides.
I live in the Bay Area, about 3 hours north of you, but my mom lives in Santa Maria. It's a nice area, and some good roads, I think you'll like it there. Welcome to the neighborhood.
I just moved here from SF. I was on Nob Hill. What I would have given to have this bike when I was up there. I plan on making the run up the PCH as soon as the weather warms up. I have friends in Oakland and Redwood City that I have to visit.
I'll be in touch. Kinda busy with work and moving right now. I am also looking for a more comfortable seat. Got any suggestions of sources? Thanks, Bikermike
preregrin, You luck dog, central coast has some of the BEST roads in all CA, maybe even THE WORLD! Hwy 58 is THE BEST! I'm in So Cal The OC (hate the TV show, like the county). I'm on my second VFR, had a `92 for 11 years, then upgraded to a `01. Wish I lived where you do, I'll have to settle for the occasional ride to/through the central cost. Take care. Sideways I'm the guy who just moved to Fruita,CO from your area. My jaunts were to where the movie "Sideways" was filmed - I rode every, every weekend on the same 3 or 4 roads - scenery I knew having lived there 17 years - develops and keeps up your skill level. I rode alone 99% of the time - in the canyons you want to focus 100% of the time on the road and what you are doing to constantly improve your skill level. One other wonderful road is on 166 past Cuyama - Mt Abel - 23 miles of twisties that will amaze you and improve your skill level rather dramatically. Enjoy!
I'll have to give that run a go. I spend a lot of free time xploring around here... always finding new twisties and great scenery and if it gets too hot inland a 10 mi run to the coast is good for 30 degrees cooler weather.
I checked them out as soon as you posted them. a lot of familiar country there. if you look in my phot gallery you will see the continuation of that countryside as you go further north. I live in north county(SLO) so most of my riding is up here. I ride by where James Dean was killed quite a bit. It doesn't really seem like that dangerous of an area.
