I put a K&N in my 6th gen a bit over a year ago for a couple of reasons. First was the hope for better performance, which I don't know for sure that it gained anything but it has not lost any power; and second because it made sense financially. The stock filter at my dealer was about $55.00 and the K&N was about $65.00 and I can re-use the K&N. The K&N has paid for itself no doubt and in my opinion thats worth it even if it didn't gain any power(which I still don't know if it did). When I put the K&N in I also added the power comander III usb and the Micron slip-ons, so there was no way to prove any increase in power just from the filter. So my vote is definately for a K&N or similar re-usable filter at least for the sake of saving money on never having to buy another filter.

er, If one were managing K&N one may have designed it for the best profit possible... ie.. less filter material, less cost and it still flows the same amount of air as stock I'd guess.

go to trueflow.com, and in the bottom right corner there is a video. Watch it. I will never use a K&N filter or any paper filter again. Foam all the way.

yodasmile I have a BMC. I did some research here and found out that the K&N even though are cheaper than BMC, dont fit that well(smaller). Actually some K&N users had to use silicone, rubber weather stripper, etc to make it fix perfect. The BMC on the other fits exactly where it should, add to that power improvement + sound (that is if u got an aftermarket or gutted exhaust). Bottom line is both filters are good aftermarket filters overall, but for my personal liking I go with BMC. Ohhh, I'm not bipolar just in case u wonder.

personally id go with the bmc...they do offer a race version and a street version on some models so check before you buy...addin an aftermarket air filter will always give the intake more air(dont believe me? then run it on the dyno before and after you install one..your air/fuel ratio will lean out across the board)your bike will run more on the lean side after the filter is installed...youll notice that the throttle will become less steady(aka more jerky) this is the side effect of leanin out the bike. the pc3 will help correct this. you do not have to install a pc3.... your bike WILL NOT be too lean as to cause damage by changin to an aftermarket filter....YOU WILL NOT BE DUMMPIN MORE CRAP INTO YOUR ENGINE....IT'S 100% SAFE TO USE K&N/BMC/UNI..ECT...but if you want the smoothness of a well tuned bike then get a pc3...install it...have a dyno shop work on the fuel ratio instead of peak horse power(most shops will lean the bike out futher on top to make more power)and get as close to perfection as you can.

as far as that video on the foam filters...lmao!!!!:ncb:

I'm surprised no one has mentioned the UNI foam mod yet.

I took my used-up stock paper filter, and cut all the crap out of it. All the paper, the extra plastic, etc. Degreased the tray, then installed some bulk UNI foam (cut to size) with high temp black silicone, and oiled it. Also re-attached the metal screen at the bottom.

I bought my first bike a 1 year 4 months ago. Replaced the stock AF with a K&N about 4000 miles ago and haven't had any problems. I definately noticed a great improvement in the <5K lurching issue (you know what I'm talking about). Much smoother afterwards with more low end torque. I thought initially my gas mileage might have improved some, but now I'm not sure. I average about 38-41 with mixed city/highway. I'd highly recommend it. I also have had them in my cars and also noticed improved performance. Good luck.
