It really depends, some gravel i'm fine on and have gone decent speeds(50k) but it was mainly hard pack and straight.

Some gravel roads i have gone 5km/h gave up turned around and walked back.

I really hate fresh gravel that moves all over on you, no matter your speed the bike drifts every what way...hate it....and i need practice as the cabin is 2-3km down a gravel road that is really bad. May not ever do it as it has lots of clay under the gravel, so loss gravel when dry, muddy when wet..

I have also never riden a dirt bike, do i just suck on gravel and lack confidence or do sport bikes just not do gravel.

John, the paint job on that 4th gen rocks.

My main concern with gravel is tire wear. I can just feel the rubber being eaten away. The second is traction. I am with the guys who say keep it on the blacktop.

If I remember my MSF course right, the instructor said keeping a brisk pace over gravel offers more traction than snailing it.

After an unfortunate incident involving a road and a car " The Patriot " above was replaced with an equally stunning " The Ambassador " below.

True, but since I'm alway's doing track day's, I always have painters tape & put the Duct tape on top of it so no sticky residue on the paint/graphics

Oh & John451 Thanks for the pic, "I Likey" !

Opps looks like I should have put a disclaimer on it.

The standard 50th Anniversary Gen 5 in the top photo "sandy part" is mine, the striking Gen 4 custom with Union Jack and Australian Southern Cross is from a fellow OzVFR'er just used my best photo I had taken at a re-group point leading into the "bad" gravel section.

Of some amusment the Green Gen 4 pictured below later turned into "the Ambassador" without either OzVFRer realising it after it had been sold to an unknown 3rd person then repurchased later by the Patriot owner after it was binned. The previous owner had spotted a few telling marks and stated it was his previous Gen 4 proving it's a small world and it also caught out some lies the middle owner told of the bikes history when selling on.

Why the pain of dirt riding is worth it, 90kms of tight road twisties coming up:
