    Hey Guys,

The bikes are loaded and we're heading out to Sacrameto tonight, arriving sometime tomorrow (May 23rd). We're heading north, then across Hwy 36 to the Coast Highway, following it down to near LA, then across to the Sierra Nevada mountains on route back to Sacramento. 7 days worth of riding.

I've researched routes on Pashnit.com but am always open to the routes that only the locals know.

I'll be checking here frequently to see if anyone is in.

    Cheers,

    Wes

hey. good to hear it's finally time. You still leaving your stuff over at Stacy & Todd's? Are they gonna ride any with you? Tell them to dust off the cobwebs and get those yammies out of the garage... Let me know if I gave you my phone numbers. If not, I'll PM them to you. I have a good route that takes you across Fort Hunter Liggett off hwy 1 for a bit then back down to north slo county. it'll give you a break from all the ocean views and RV gawkers then you can jump back on it at any time...

I've got a few nice Sierra Nevada routes north of Yosemite, even a simple loop around Lake Tahoe is pretty cool. I'd love to ride with you guys if the schedule can work out but I'll be on a dirt biking trip Sunday thru Monday. I'll PM you my cell phone # since this will probably be the last I'm online till early next week.

Argh, f-n VFR is a jalopy.... Been having bike problems and am wishing I was riding my '73 Yamaha TX-750 right about now... Go figure, the bike works flawlessly for the 3200 kms I've put on this spring then I get 1500 miles from my shop and tools and the thing starts to fall apart...

More later. Gotta ride every minute I can cuz I'm spending so much time wrenching on this thing....

    Hey Guys,

Thanks for the offers. I managed to limp my way through the trip. The bike was a riot to ride when it wasnt broke down... I put on about 2400 km's in 6 days throughout northern California.

I'll post some details, pics and videos when I get them all loaded onto the PC.

    Cheers,

    Wes

    Hey Guys,

I've been a bit down on the VFR in my last few posts and wanted to explain a bit. I was really disapointed with the situation which was no fault of the bike. It just had a negative effect on my trip.

Some background: I bought my bike from a bike shop in Michigan back in December. The bike had some minor body damage from a low speed tip but came with a clean bill of health. I got a good deal and repainted it myself. Between then and 2 weeks ago I had put 3200 kms on it without a single hickup. I was confident that my first Honda would be fantastically reliable.

We were just outside of Petaluma, Ca putting on my heated vest when I noticed the VFR bleeding. I popped the left fairing off to find that my rad was leaking from the core. So, we ended the day in Petaluma.

Inspection of the rad showed that the fan had been hitting the rad very slightly, likely from the low speed tip over. Over the past few months of riding it had worn a very small hole in the core.

Unfortunately the next day 2 was memorial day so they'd rolled up the streets and nothing was open except a hardware store. So, my engineer/mechanic side kicked in and I decided to bypass the radiator and see what happened. It was cool (~60 F) so I was hoping I could limp up the Pacific coast highway until I could find a rad shop. Everything worked well and it never got above 210 F. After another day of searching I found that no one was willing to try to braze or weld the core. So, I ended up cutting the offending cores, rolling them over on themselves and J-B welding the heck out of them.

    Problem solved.

    More to come
